About this deal

The only recognizeable face is the British fellow who appears in English shows like 'Rumpole of the Bailey' and 'To The Manor Born'. Read the book and you are there in the Italian mountains with him: You can feel the stony soil, smell the wood smoke in the air, sense the snow on the wind. He conjures up the stubborn, fatalistic, bloody-minded locals who risked their lives for him so vividly that they seem to be standing in front of you. You share his fears and his hopes. He makes you laugh and he makes you weep. It's quite an achievement for an author commonly labeled as a travel writer. — Simon Mawer [4]

Love and War in the Apennines - Wikipedia

Love and War in the Apennines’ is Newby's tribute to the selfless and courageous people who were to be his saviours and companions during this troubled time and of their bleak and unchanging way of life. Of the cast of idiosyncratic characters, most notable was the beautiful local girl on a bike who would teach him the language, and eventually help him escape; two years later they were married and would spend the rest of their lives as co-adventurers. Part travelogue, part escape story and part romance, this is a mesmerising account of wisdom, courage, humour and adventure, and tells the story of the early life of a man who would become one of Britain's best-loved literary adventurers. Why did they risk their lives in this way? One man tells him that some of them have sons forced to fight in Russia. ‘They feel that you are in a similar condition to that of their sons who, they hope, are being given help wherever they are.’ His job, he says, is to give lectures on Renaissance painting and architecture to soldiers who are, he says, mournfully, ‘engaged in destroying them’. Vanessa Feltz reveals how she has coped with heartbreak following split from Ben Ofoedu: 'I have been out every single night for 129 nights'Kim Kardashian is a busty blonde babe as she poses for the new resort 2023 campaign for Marc Jacobs He believes that the Germans are in the wrong and, because of this, they will lose the war. ‘We must. We have to.’ He advises Newby to pass the winter in the Apennines, and to wait for the spring before moving on. I was interested to read this book as my grandfather was in the Special Boat Service (SBS) during WWII and had been in Sicily. That's all I knew. Like many other men from that era who had survived war, he would never talk about it. Newby writes about the Italian army being in dire need of food and remarks that in Britain there were organizations that worked together to support the troops. In contrast, in Italy, there were "no volunteer ladies dishing out fish and chips to them, and great squelchy, jam sandwiches, and cups of orange-colored tea, and, saying "Hello" and asking where they came from, making them feel that they were doing something worthwhile which somebody cared about." For me, this was probably the highlight of my reading experience along with the description of the clothing that the prisoners were wearing.

M&S Christmas advert star Tan France slams criticism of the 'Palestinian flag' colours used in the commercial - pointing out it was filmed in AUGUST Victoria Coren Mitchell, 51, reveals she's given birth to her second child after surprise pregnancy with husband David, 49Everyone he encounters is, quite understandably, scared to death. A friendly doctor drops him off at a safe house, but, the moment the doctor has gone, the owner tells Newby that he will have to go. The action jumps forward to his life in a prison camp near Parma where the armistice is nigh as the allies invade at Salerno and the prisoners make their escape. Newby is hindered by his fractured ankle, obtained falling down a marble staircase, and is put onto a horse which almost immediately throws him off into the mud having refused to jump a ditch. The lives of the peasants amongst whom Newby found shelter, high on the Pian dei Sotto, was very little changed from what it had been for hundreds of years, one imagines. This was inhospitable country; eking a living from it required a maximum of effort, resourcefulness and stoicism. When Newby returned some 12 years later, in 1956, he found that things had already changed dramatically: some of those he had known had died, some had moved away, and the focus of the area was turning from farming to tourism.
