About this deal

a: Depletion of arginine and glutamine is particularly common during periods of starvation and catabolic stress, and supplementation has been shown to improve patient outcome (Labow 2000, Oehler 2002).

EmerAid IC Omnivore® is a therapeutic diet designed to be used only under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator. Unlike many enteral feeding products that are merely recovery diets, the EmerAid Intensive Care line replenishes the patient’s depleted energy, fat, and protein stores. EmerAid Intensive Care Herbivore, EmerAid Carnivore, and EmerAid Omnivore all contain: Table 1. In adult dogs, EmerAid ® Intensive Care HDN™ Canine feeding recommendations are based on predicted resting energy requirements (RER) a BWUse a syringe to draw up the mixture. To minimize any risk of the tube plugging, do not load the feeding or gavage tube with formula until immediately before tube feeding. Exotic EmerAid products can also be fed in combination to best meet the needs of special species that have varied diets, including box turtles, bearded dragons, chameleons, skinks, aquatic turtles, geese, many free-ranging songbirds, hedgehogs, as well as mice, rats, gerbils, and hamsters. For instance, EmerAid IC Omnivore and EmerAid IC Carnivore can be mixed for hedgehogs. To view additional combinations recommended for exotic animals, please view our Basic Use Guide. Developed by an expert panel including exotic animal veterinarians, emergency clinicians and nutritionists, this is the firstsemi-elementaldiet designed for the critically ill omnivore.

Feed as the sole diet for 10 days or less unless directed otherwise by your veterinarian. For patients with poor weight gain or malabsorptive conditions, Emeraid can also be mixed with the regular diet to boost enterocyte function and enhance digestion (25%-30% Emeraid; 70%-75% regular diet). Standard mixing directions: Mix three parts powder to two parts warm water 122°F (50°C). Stir until smooth. The EmerAid System for Exotic Animal Critical Care includes EmerAid Carnivore, EmerAid Herbivore, and EmerAid Omnivore. By using these products singly or in combination, many different ill exotic animals can benefit nutritionally. EmerAid Piscivore is the first semi-elemental diet designed for the critically ill fish-eater.It may also be used for some types of lizards, small mammals, and rodents such as sugar gliders, squirrels, mice, and rats. In the adult animal, crop or stomach volume is estimated as 30 ml/kg (3% body weight). The first feeding is often one-third to one-half of this calculated volume, however the volume and number of feedings must be adjusted based on patient species and condition. Once the patient is stable and doing well on an EmerAid Intensive Care, the diet can be gradually transitioned to EmerAid Sustain Herbivore or the patient’s regular food under the guidance of a veterinarian. Feed your patient immediately whenever possible, and always within 30 minutes of food preparation. Keep the gavage tube and syringe in very warm water 103-105°F (39-41°C) until ready to feed. Fill the syringe with formula. To minimize any risk of the tube plugging, do not load the feeding or gavage tube with formula until immediately before tube feeding. Dietary nucleotides provide RNA and DNA precursors to support the immune system, nourish the gastrointestinal tract, and assist in weight gain When an animal “crashes,” the immune system is put on high alert and antioxidants are needed in larger quantities (Chandra 1997, Manzanares 2013). The EmerAid Intensive Care Diets support the body’s self-defense system by providing high levels of nutrients critical to immune function and antioxidant systems (Table 1). Diets containing nutrients that support the immune system have been shown to enhance the recovery of critically ill human patients, and there is strong evidence to suggest this same potential in animals (Chan 2008, de Aguilar 2012, Manzanares 2013). Table 1. Nutrients in EmerAid Critical Care Diets that support the immune system: EmerAid® Sustain™ HDN Canine is a therapeutic diet scientifically designed to support canines that are recovering from critical illness, suffering from chronic medical conditions, or underweight. It is also designed to transition the debilitated dog from intensive care nutrition to normal feeding. As a recovery diet, it contains more whole nutrients than the Intensive Care HDN Canine. This therapeutic diet is easily absorbed and highly digestible. Learn more
