About this deal

While the fact that the Petzl Actik Core can crank out 450 lumens of light is impressive, what truly makes this headlamp special is that it can achieve that brightness while still weighing just 2.6 ounces (75 grams). That puts it amongst the brightest and lightest head torches on the market, offering outstanding performance with little bulk. The headlamp includes multiple illumination levels and offers both a flood pattern for illuminating a wider area and a “mixed” option for a narrower–but still dispersed–beam. The unit comes with a red-light (both continuous and strobe) for night vision as well, which comes in handy when using the headlamp around others. This headlamp will suit most general use requirements, not just sky watchers. It uses a single button operation that is obvious to the touch and responsive, so it can easily be operated when wearing gloves on those cold nights. The battery compartment is easy to open too, either to change the batteries or to plug it into a power bank using a micro-USB charger. Nitecore NU31: A durable headlamp that's built to last in all environments and weather. There's a slight green tint in the white light, but this wouldn't bother most users. The Petzl Actik Core 450is a great headlamp for camping and it's also the best headlamp overall in our guide. It's a durable, reliable, bright but comfortable headlamp with a white and red light option. It does have an unusually robust design for a headlamp. Its IPX8 waterproof rating means that it's safe for continuous immersion in water and the anodized aluminum housing makes it incredibly strong. During our review, it even got dropped from one meter on hard ground with no adverse effects whatsoever.

This powerful headtorch is the result of endless testing and research from Petzl. At full power the Actik will pump out 350 lumens and will run for two hours before it requires a charge. If battery life is more of a priority, the Actik can run for a massive 160 hours on Petzl's Max Autonomy mode.

Specifications

The dual mode projects a broad, bright and distant beam, again, very impressive for a smaller lamp. HYBRID CONCEPT design: ACTIK® comes with three AAA/LR03 batteries and is also compatible with the CORE rechargeable battery (not included); it automatically detects the energy source and adjusts lighting performance

The direction of the beam can be manually adjusted for either close-up focused work or as a flood straight ahead of you. Petzl ACTIK CORE: Performance WARNING: This lamp is not certified for road use: when used in an area governed by traffic regulations, Petzl lights are not a substitute for required standardized lights. Overall the best headlamp is the Petzl Actik Core 450because of its reliability, build quality and versatility. However, the Knog Bilby 400 Headlampand BioLite HeadLamp 425are also both incredibly good headlamps thanks to full waterproofing and 60 hour runtime, respectively. What is the best headlamp for camping? The average headlamp features a range of lighting modes, including spot, flood, colored, and strobe lights. The default setting for most lamps is their powerful LED spot beam, which focuses the light at a distance rather than casting it wide around you (the max distance these can reach is listed in the "max beam" section of our comparison table). While not necessary in all circumstances, a long-distance beam can be helpful for looking far down a trail, trying to spot an anchor while rappelling, or even for extreme uses like caving. A proximity beam illuminates the area right in front of you

Our Verdict

It takes a whopping 4 x AAA batteries, so we'd recommend getting yourself a charger and some rechargeable batteries to keep long-term costs down. It has a useful battery life indicator (green 100%-50%, yellow 50%-25% and red 25%- 0%) so you don't get caught out. The BioLite HeadLamp 330 is the most comfortable headlamp we've tested. It has a 'no-bounce' design to help runners, with a reflective strip on the rear for added safety. What is the brightest headlamp? The BioLite HeadLamp 330 is ideal if you want to save a bit of cash and don't need as many lumens as the other BioLite models that sit in this guide offer. It is so tiny you'll soon forget you have it on. It has a 'no bounce' design that rests flat against the forehead which is mostly useful for runners, but it also means that it won't get in the way of you looking through a scope or viewfinder. ACTIK® with a rechargeable battery! The ideal rechargeable headlamp to extend your dynamic outdoor activities. Casting 600 lumens, ACTIK® CORE provides powerful and comfortable lighting to go with you when you're running, trekking, or mountaineering. Its phosphorescent reflector makes it easy to find in the dark and red lighting keeps you from blinding those around you when you’re with a group. ACTIK® CORE comes with the CORE rechargeable battery and also works with three standard batteries, thanks to its HYBRID CONCEPT design.

For safety purposes, the headband is reflective when another light is shone on it and is equipped with an emergency whistle for rescue situations if the time ever comes. If you get caught out in a shower, the Actik is rated IPX4, therefore it'll resist light to medium showers of rain before anything begins to pass through. It's water resistant, basically. Three white lighting levels: MAX BURN TIME, STANDARD (better power/burn time balance) and MAX POWER The Olight Perun 2 is an innovative design in the headlamp market since it doubles up as a headlamp and flashlight all in one. While it's not a traditional headlamp, we felt that it was underrated as a multi-purpose light and deserved a place in this list, awarding it 4.5 stars in our Olight Perun 2 review. You can use either three AAA batteries, or the Petzl Actik Core High-capacity 1250 mAh Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. (Image credit: Tantse Walter) As with the previous versions, the Actik Core still has a red light mode to preserve night vision and is also less bothersome to others trying to sleep when moving about camp.I would have liked to have seen a setting for an even narrower, more focused, beam, but as is it is hard to fault the Actik Core too much. The bottom line is that it is incredibly bright, even on the lower settings, delivering plenty of light when and where you need it most. The Nitecore NU31 is a traditional-looking, affordable headlamp with enough features to satisfy most stargazers. We found a lot to like about the design in our Nitecore NU31 review, right down to the reflective band that will help your campmates to spot you in the dark. This headlamp is particularly noteworthy for its robust aluminum casing whereas many other models are plastic. This adds to its durability, making it resistant to impacts up to a meter. It also has the added bonus of helping to dissipate heat. Although the Nitecore comes with IP66 waterproofing, which is sufficient for most weather conditions, it won't stand up to being fully submerged in water like some of the other models on this list. To guarantee you're getting honest, up-to-date recommendations on the best headlamps to buy here at Space.com we make sure to put every headlamp through a rigorous review to fully test each device. Each headlamp is reviewed based on a multitude of aspects, from its construction and design to how well it functions and its performance in the field.

We have spent the past couple of weeks using the Actik Core headlamp for various activities, including late-night dog walking, sky watching, festival camping and using during wildlife rehabilitation activities. Here's what we think. Petzl ACTIK CORE 450: Design In keeping with its flashlight design, the Olight Perun 2 is the brightest light on our list at an impressive 2500 lumens. However, this is extremely bright and may be overkill for your purposes. The Silva Terra Scout XT is a very affordable headlamp built for the eco-conscious consumer. It is made from hemp and 100% recycled plastics, which means it leaves a 90% lower CO2 footprint as well. In addition to helping the planet, this construction process means that each unit has its own unique look, and it also makes it very lightweight and comfortable to wear. But we also found the Olight Perun 2 a fantastic light for camping thanks to its clever design features. We loved how you can attach it to a tent pole via its magnetic base and even set a three or nine minute timer so that it will automatically turn off without you needing to leave your sleeping bag. What is the best budget headlamp? Included is a white storage bag, which doubles as a light diffuser making for a nice little lamp around camp. Lighting performance with 3 AAA / LR6 batteries Lighting performance as defined by the ANSI/PLATO FL 1 protocol As we've already mentioned, you can power it with either three AAA batteries or the included CORE rechargeable battery. The battery compartment sits behind the lamp and is simple to open with your fingers when it's time to recharge but secure enough that it won't pop open unnecessarily. Compatible with the HELMET ADAPT and BIKE ADAPT 2 mounts, so you can fix the lamp on a variety of helmet types or a bicycle (1)
