About this deal

Above: the 1963 Polish poster (23" x 36") by Roman Cieslewicz. I like how, intentionally or not, the finger print at the bottom of the poster hint at the vortex swirls of Bass’s design, though beyond that this is as different, and as unrecognizable as Vertigo, as you could imagine.

The song, recorded in February of 1997, represents the effect the 1996 restoration and October 25, 1996 re-release had on audiences for whom Vertigo had all but disappeared from public consciousness. [134] [135] The song largely summarizes the plot of the film. [136]

Over time the film has been re-evaluated by film critics and has moved higher in esteem in most critics' opinions. Every ten years since 1952, the British Film Institute's film magazine, Sight & Sound, has asked the world's leading film critics to compile a list of the 10 greatest films of all time. [84] In the 1962 and 1972 polls, Vertigo was not among the top 10 films in voting. Only in 1982 did Vertigo enter the list, and then in 7th place. [85] By 1992 it had advanced to 4th place, [86] by 2002 to 2nd, and in 2012 to 1st place in both the crime genre, and overall, ahead of Citizen Kane in 2nd place; in 2022, the Sight & Sound poll ranked Vertigo 2nd place. [87] In the 2012 Sight & Sound director's poll of the greatest films ever made Vertigo was ranked 7th. [88] In the earlier 2002 version of the list the film ranked 6th among directors. [89] [90] In 2022 edition of the list the film ranked 6th in the director's poll. [91] In 1998 Time Out conducted a poll and Vertigo was voted the 5th greatest film of all time. [92] The Village Voice ranked Vertigo at No. 3 in its Top 250 "Best Films of the Century" list in 1999, based on a poll of critics. [93] Entertainment Weekly voted it the 19th Greatest film of all time in 1999. [94] In January 2002, the film was voted at No. 96 on the list of the "Top 100 Essential Films of All Time" by the National Society of Film Critics. [95] [96] In 2009, the film was ranked at No. 10 on Japanese film magazine Kinema Junpo 's Top 10 Non-Japanese Films of All Time list. [97] In 2022, Time Out magazine ranked the film at No.15 on their list of "The 100 best thriller films of all time". [98]

Size may vary, either vertical or horizontal format. There are also double Photobusta or mini Photobusta. The technical specification for the poster reads as a screenprint. The small photographic elements, hand-cut type and solid bright orange are all indicators of this process. Accordingly, the film is positioned as an edgy and psychologically complex story, slightly outside the Hollywood mainstream. Hand-drawn lettering and hypotrochoid curves Three of these films: Rear Window, Vertigo and Psycho, constitute a trilogy that explores the theme of voyeurism. This was especially significant in the later 1950s, as it introduced a psychological concept that had been explained to a popular audience, in part at least, by Freud. Elster's fictitious Dogpatch shipyard office was filmed at the real (or simulated with mattes) Union Iron Works shipyard, by then the post-WW2 Bethlehem Steel shipyard. Elster's office has a MIssion telephone exchange (MI or 64) prefix, regarding which Midge says "Why, that's Skid Row", probably because the city's southern MIssion exchange served all of the south-of-slot (SoMa today) and southern (Mission District) phones, and this shipyard area of course met the description of a Skid Row. The big colour productions of the 1950s greatly extended the production credits. Incorporating this extra information into the title sequence made it too long. Accordingly, the credits began to be organised so that title and big names were placed at the front of the film and production and general credits at the end. So, part of what Bass was doing was a pragmatic choice to organise this information clearly.
