About this deal

We have poems exploring self-love, self-hate, body-image, girls supporting girls, motherly love, feminism, insecurity, sexual assault, and so much more. Blooming addresses the joy Kaur finally found coming to love and accept her roots, herself, and the world around her. However, Kaur’s ambrosia formula of abstract sketches and lower case-lettered odes to self-love in ‘milk and honey’ seem at risk of souring if unoriginally repeated in the new publication ‘the sun and her flowers’. With the exception of apostrophes to indicate possessives and contractions, there is scant punctuation.

I can see how this would be meaningful to young girls though; my younger self from 5 years ago probably would have enjoyed Kaur's poetry more, because I dealt with emotionally abusive relationships back then. Y no quiero decir que en este libro no tengamos poemas sobre el amor y lo difícil que es sobrellevar una relación romántica, pero con el estilo único de Rupi, si me terminaron gustando. However, the brave honesty of Kaur figures her as a literary revolutionary, fighting against oppression through fragmentation and the dismantling of taboo.Yet, what is so crucial and refreshing in ‘the sun and her flowers’ is the defiant refusal to find validation in a lover’s approval. It's not a style I enjoy at all, and the entire book just felt too Tumblr and cheesy and simplistic. Interestingly, the poet, Benhaim, is a performance poet and this is reflected in this written collection. By questioning the definition of love, Kaur emphasises our unhealthy obsession with romantic affection alone.

However, Kaur was disturbed by recent events in America, and consequently found herself drawn to writing about the political implications of immigration and diaspora. the illustrations are ABSOLUTELY perfection, I love them so much they add so much depth to the poems. Rather than laziness or a pretentious attempt at originality, her use of only lower-case letters is an attempt to include Gurmukhi script in her work, in which divisions between upper or lower casing do not exist. The Guardian review quoted poems from Kaur's collection and explained how simplistic the language often is. Traditionally, books are first published in hardcover, and their paperback version comes out about a year later.Love Her Wild is the first collection of “Instagram” poetry I have ever read and it did not disappoint. If you have a friend trying to put their life back together after a break up this book will help them focus on the path they need to take. Yet the last three sections made up for the brokenness of the character described in the first two sections.
