About this deal

It displays their ingenuity, their sense of family, and their courage in a fast moving tale, culminating in being reunited with their loving grandfather. The book tells the story of George and Willie Muse, two African-American brothers who were kidnapped and forced to perform as sideshow attractions because they were albinos. George and Willie Muse are two brothers growing up in Truevine, part of a sharecropping family that live in a tobacco farming community near Roanoke, Virginia.

The story is told through alternating chapters from Berlin in the early 1920’s to London in 1956 and the reader is taken back through history to the beginning of Hitler’s power. Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann…kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. As his younger sister, Franny, suffers a spiritual and existential breakdown in her parents’ Manhattan living room—leaving Bessie, her mother, deeply concerned—Zooey comes to her aid, offering what he thinks is brotherly love, understanding, and words of sage advice. Jessica was a Communist; Debo became the Duchess of Devonshire; Nancy was one of the best-selling novelists of her day; the ethereally beautiful Diana was the most hated woman in England; and Unity Valkyrie, born in Swastika, Alaska, would become obsessed with Adolf Hitler. Perhaps that's why he's so dutiful in endlessly detailing the facts of such a hideous time in his "most personal novel to date" – his prerogative, but the history overwhelms the characters he chooses to populate it.The language sounded a bit funny — there was lots of Australian and British slang thrown into the story, sounding quite odd in a 1930s Germany scenario — but I did enjoy it nevertheless. Kopa is eager for his father to take him to the top of Pride Rock, but when kingly business gets in the way, Simba is unable to fulfill his promise. In the book, Macy notes that it was possible that the children were sent to the circus by their mother, as their albino skin made it unlikely that they would survive long as sharecroppers, but that "if you ask me in my heart, I'm gonna go with [Willie Muse's] story". Not only this but that's all there really is to her character, never is anything other than her looks mentioned in relation to her so the boys devotion to her just comes across as empty and again.

There’s Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and brother Byron, who’s thirteen and an ‘official juvenile delinquent. Lydia is the favourite child of Marilyn and James Lee; a girl who inherited her mother's bright blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair. The Scorpio Races are held every November on the island of Thisby, where Puck lives with her older brothers after the death of their parents. Yet the Charlton brothers both enjoyed great success as football players and together, for England, they won the World Cup. Almost from the start of the novel I found Dagmar to be self-ish/self-absorbed/manipulative/vain/mean-spirited, so the massive plot twist that she was in fact all of those things was pretty lack-luster to me.So it is no wonder that these foundational relationships provide rich material in books about siblings. Both were financially very successful, but Jack remained staunchly left-wing while Bobby tended to conservatism. They’re heading South to Birmingham, Alabama, toward one of the darkest moments in America’s history. In addition, there’s Silke, the maid’s daughter, a Communist in the making, not least because she’s jealous of Dagmar. However, I didn't feel the language used represented the time period but I'm not sure if Elton did this deliberately as he does tend to not follow the rules generally.

Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love. They performed for years as sideshow attractions where they were cruelly exploited and frequently portrayed as savages from another country or Martians. Whenever the sole three-dimensional character, Dagmar, takes the stage, the story threatens to come alive with a whoosh. There were parts where I almost cheered and one of the main character's deaths (towards the end of the book, you'll probably know which when you get to it) had me in floods of tears. Captivating, unputdownable, devastating and yet amusing at times, Ben Elton accurately tells a fictional story of Otto and Paulus Stengel, amidst the true, mind altering horror that was Nazi Germany. It is particularly annoying because the sincerity of what Elton is trying to achieve here is so apparent.
