About this deal

The plot even takes a moment to humorously comment on the social effects of movie violence through the many exchanges between Kennedy and Matthew Lillard. The design is filled with various subtle ambient effects, like birds and crickets chirping in the distance, generating a convincingly immersive soundfield. Things get considerably more complex as a gaggle of supporting characters wander into the fray, including Dewey (David Arquette), a bumbling police deputy, Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), an aspiring news reporter, and in a very funny portrayal, Jamie Kennedy as the resident horror film buff of the group, Randy Meeks.

Look at Sarah Michelle Gellar’s crocheted top as she’s trying to talk to the police outside the sorority house at 31mins 28s, now you can see the very fine strands of wool in her top, whereas a switch back to the previous blu-ray reveals a horrible smeary mess, with no discernible detail at all. Wes Craven's 'Scream' is a well constructed and cleverly entertaining feature which revitalized the slasher movie, as well as the career of the legendary director. But layer on top of that, that ironic and meta-understanding of the genre and a superb set of characters that are both timeless stereotypes and beautifully subverted tropes in themselves, and the film bursts into life in a way that a decade of horror films from across the spectrum of horror never really managed and has struggled to recapture since. It's rare a horror movie is this much fun, but in fact fun is what Scream still is, even after all these years, which is why it remains so many people's favorite scary movie. These weren’t just rules, these were recognisable facts in all but the hardiest of cases (Jim Cameron notwithstanding).

But best of all, that hideous artificial sharpening is completely banished – check out barely 15s into the film as the camera pans down on the cinema marquee: the previous 1080p image shows thick white edging around the words’ Sneak Preview Tonight Only’, giving the lit background to them a very noisy look.

Still, essential tones are nice and lively, skin tones are healthy, and whites and blacks are contextually fine, just not super dynamic.

Black levels are also impressive, especially when Ghostface's cloak rustles in front of shadowy backgrounds. Kennedy is hilarious in his scenes, and Campbell is winsome and well balanced between steely resolve and quivering fear. Craven’s love of close ups gives us plenty of opportunities to spot the wonderful fine detail in the faces of his cast and all reveal so much more texture here than they previously did. Applying the receiver's Dolby Surround or DTS: Neural:X up-mixing functionality further extends some of these atmospherics with satisfying effectiveness, but the musical score gains the most in this respect, evenly spreading across the entire soundstage while lightly bleeding into the rears and height with ease. The interiors come with a warmer glowing yellow shade that varies between a dynamic golden hue and a comfier marigold tint while Dewey's uniform shows a fuller range of browns and tans. Pans and movement are smooth and flawless, and channel separation is nicely balanced, creating a welcoming and spacious soundstage. Channelling Hitchcock more than ever, each of these are beautifully constructed, tension-filled and eschewing so many of the usual idiotic cliches of so many of its brethren – here people do the right thing, make sensible decisions and still end up on the end of a bloody knife, all of which just amps up that tension even further. Paramount Home Media Distribution will release a 4K Blu-ray SteelBook Edition of Wes Craven's Scream 2 (1997), starring David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Jamie Kennedy.
