About this deal

Great illustrations that show the difference between children and adults (hey, adult, remember that your child is watching you watch your phone! As my assistant, a truly talented artist commented: "Whenever you give me a pile of picture books to look at, 5 or 6 of them look like this. Rocket Says Look Up! a book by Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola Rocket Says Look Up! a book by Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola

Rocket dreams of being an astronaut, like one of her heroes Mae Jemison- the first African American woman in space. Surely Jamal could have checked up on his phone exactly what time the shower was due and still experience the event together? On one page, these facts were dropped one after the other and we see Jamal look down at her obviously annoyed and over meteor showers, lol. I am sure the kid is OK with it now, but I wonder if she is so happy with it when she is a teen or an adult with a job.

He’s a rising star in the world of screenwriting and has an animated series, Afro Kid, currently under option in England. Rocket wants to be the greatest astronaut, star-catcher and space-traveller who has ever lived, just like Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space. A blue-eyed gray blob and a brown-eyed brown blob sit side by side, unsure as to what’s going to happen next. A delightful and educational book for young readers interested in space travel, with colourful illustrations, large-print text, fun facts, diverse characters and heartfelt father-daughter interactions.

She is desperate for everyone to look up at the sky as a comet that will be visible in the sky tonight! Inspired by Mae Jemison, Rocket, a supercute black girl with braids and a coiffed Afro, hopes to be “the greatest astronaut, star catcher, and space walker who has ever lived. Having said that, there are loads of boring and uninspiring children's books and at least this one tells the story of a little black girl with great and big dreams and amazing natural hair. They give the effect of the night sky with stars peeking out, and I love how Rocket is drawn because of her hairstyle: cornrows going back into a bun with a high, mini afro puff (it’s so cute!

A comet will be visible tonight, and Rocket wants everyone to see it with her–even her big brother, Jamal, whose attention is usually trained on his phone or video games. But then it kind of morphs into a PSA to older kids/teens to stop looking at their cellphones and live in the now.To prepare for her dream, she wants to see the Phoenix Meteor Shower, so her brother agrees to take her. As a follow-up, readers should be encouraged to make their own suggestions to complete the titular phrase.

I like how extroverted and talkative Rocket is and her infectious enthusiasm to see the meteor shower. The creative naiveté of the “clay mates” is perfectly captured by Petty’s feisty, spot-on dialogue: “This was your idea…and it was a BAD one.

Adeola has a real talent for portraying expression, from teen Jamal’s sulks to Rocket’s jubilation at watching the stars. Just when she is about to give up, the meteor shower begins and everyone, including Jamal, looks up! She tells everyone in her community about it and hopes that her older brother, who will take her to the park to see the meteor shower, will put his phone away and enjoy the experience with her. The Wimbledon family keep getting woken up by their dog, Stanley - what could he possibly be up to in the middle of the night? Inspired by the activism of Rosa Parks, Rocket rallies support from her peers, and together they lead a peaceful protest that spreads awareness and raises enough money to save their beloved library.
