Gaylord Archival® 3 mil Archival Polyester Newspaper Sleeves (5-Pack) provide long-term protection for newspapers in flat storage or oversize prints or maps. Polyester is a sturdy, crystal clear material with a glass-like surface and archival properties that areapproved by museums for indefinite storage (hundreds of years). Gloves are also essential when handling textiles and old paper to avoid leaving oils from your hands. Supportive protective enclosures include: acid- and lignin-free buffered folders, flat boxes with lids the same depth as the base, and stiff boards for "board-setting" (sandwiching neat stacks between preservation-quality boards and securing the sandwich with broad strips of poly strapping or strips of bookcloth fastened together).

A cheaper alternative is acid-free tissue paper which, while not preventing the spread of acid between pages, does reduce the risk of increasing the acidity of the newspaper. Make sure that you don’t run the newspaper through an automatic feeder as it could damage the original document.Before storing, have the item professionally dry cleaned by a local company experienced with vintage textiles. Instead, carefully place the newspaper on the top glass for scanning, being careful not to press down too hard on the cover. When newspapers or clippings are valued most for the information they contain, and not as artifacts, copying the information onto a more permanent quality paper should be undertaken.
