About this deal

As cranky as I can be, I can't really find any faults here with the physical execution and overall functionality with the exception of volume control issue. Layering is good and the sound-stage is respectably wide, but the upfront presentation doesn’t convey much depth. With X6 MKII you should experience what the drive of a powerful dedicated headphone-amp can do, especially if you have somewhat demanding headphones.

There are two analog outputs, one line level that is fixed and the other, on the front going through a headphone amplification stage. Dongles such as Dragonfly Black and Lusya Fever can’t compete in terms of bass control and kick, as well as overall dynamics of the sound. Soon after the other two answered, but they said no, plugging the headphones won't mute the speakers. I won’t be including detailed diagrams and graphs, which you can find here, but will be reviewing based on my opinion of sound quality, build, aesthetics and various other factors. It would be connected to a stereo amplifier/receiver, and a TV attached to it, and in the future also some external streamer (like wiim mini or something like that in the budget class) for Tydal/Qobuz.

As is common for me these days with the latest "Creators" version of Windows 10, I test these DACs by simply plugging them in and NOT installing any drivers. Testing was done with my Kingston HyperX Cloud (essentially a Takstar Pro 80) and a host of different IEMs. But rather than being a total shock, this has just served to increase my suspicion that the very lowest low notes, are a slight weakness with the H10 (just like the highest treble). Just why can't I help wondering whether they had any budget left for important things like a nice multilayer board? I can therefore conclude that if you wish to get better headphones, a DAC/AMP becomes an essential part of your audio setup. If they're bypassing the volume control, then I'd guess that they're bypassing the X6 dac/amp combi's amp section, altogether. Playing this on the DAC-X6 sounded cleaner and crisper in the high notes, and the bass again had more punch to it. My hypothesis was that there is some postfiltering after the DAC stage going on depending on the sample rate at which the device is used.
