I feel like some themes had space for further development - or that the stories started between characters weren’t complete.

Through the character of Jo, Sue Cheung tells her own semi-autobiographical story of growing up in 80s England and finding herself caught between two cultures. Reading Jo Kwan's story makes me want to fight along her battles against all the injustices that she deals with on a daily basis. But unlike the other kids at her new school or her posh cousins, Jo lives above her parents' Chinese takeaway. I intend to read other works by BAME authors such as Kiley Reid’s ‘Such a Fun Age’, Souvankham Thammavongsa’s ‘How to Pronounce Knife’ and Paul Mendez’s ‘Rainbow Milk’ this year. I’ve seen some pirated DVDs–animated kids movies like Toy Story– full of obscenities in the English subtitles (clearly the work of an expat jackass). The book is told in diary format as Jo decided she was going to document all the good and hilarious things that happened in her life, although a few not so funny moments are recorded too including racism, bullying, and child abuse. Group 3 with English-speaking teachers (both native and nonnative speakers) judged the comparative clarity of English and Chinglish word pairs: more clear for 42. For example, " 看 電影" means "to see a film" or "to watch movie", " 看 書" means "to read a book", " 看 著 我" means "to look at me".

Pidgin usage began to decline in the late 19th century when Chinese and missionary schools began teaching Standard English. There are amazing and very funny illustrations throughout the book and they really do bring Jo’s past to life. Well written and easy to read, Chinglish was surprisingly entertaining and definitely one I would recommend.She and her family have just moved to their new Chinese takeaway, but her hopes for a fresh start are immediately dashed when she sees there’s no living room, and she has to share a room with little sister Bonny while big brother Simon lives with their grandparents. At first, I quite enjoyed this quirky novel that read like younger YA and reminded me of the Georgia Nicholson books with its lightheartedness and diary entries. To me this was a bit repetitive and dull but as a teen, who if I opened my diary again it would have looked identical to this (I also used to love Angus, Thongs series so diary-esq books were right up my alley in those days. Not wanting to look bad, they either pull out their Chinese-English dictionary (many poorly edited by Chinese) or rely on translation software and hope that no one complains.
