About this deal

This means the child can't push the chest clip down far enough to wiggle his arms out (as long as the harness is really snug). If at all possible, I’d encourage the kids to ride in a traditional passenger vehicle while another adult drives the motorhome. Please do not duct tape the chest clip together, tie knots in the straps above and below the chest clip, or other desperate (but unsafe) maneuvers to try and outsmart your Houdini. Ideally for a forward facing car seat, you would have a lap belt AND a top tether to decrease forward head movement.

This seems to be a regulation unique to the US, as you won’t find that stipulation listed when you look at the manual for the same car seat in the EU – the Doona is a great example of this difference. Now that our child has grown out of the infant car seat, we’re on the market for a new convertible car seat. We use the car key to pop it open because it is very convenient and always with us as we get him out of his booster. My almost 5 year old son with autism would suddenly unbuckle and would be standing next to me in our van. You’re not alone if your child’s started releasing the harness buckle or wriggling out of the belt – most children will do it at some time.In difference to the 103Z vest, the 203 vest opens and closes at the front and used in situations, where the occupant needs to be held upright if they are unable to manage it themselves. Behold: a little parent magic trick to foil even the most determined young Houdini — the Button-Down Shirt Trick! The catch cannot be hidden, must be obvious and accessible and mustn’t require a large force to release it.

Refer to vehicle owner’s manual to determine if the belts in your vehicle lock by switching the seat belt’s retractor or they have a locking latch plate that locks the vehicle’s seat belts so they will not move freely.

I know that you cannot twist straps, but what about turning the buckle piece around to face towards him? If you have determined that the car you’re riding in does have locking seatbelts, you can use this method to install your car seat without a locking clip. Their chest clip guard and buckle guard make it virtually impossible for a child to escape from a 5 point harness. My DD was also having this problem, can't tell you how to prevent it, we have to have her PCA ride with to keep an eye on her and keep her occupied. ETA: It's the TrendZ EuroSport that I was thinking of, and though it definitely wouldn't be a long term solution (top harness slots are only 15"), if you son has a short enough torso, it very well might be worth a try!

If you really don’t want to deal with a locking clip, the Britax Allegiance is the lightest car seat with a built-in lock off. I'm Melissa, a real-life mom of two, world traveler and certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (aka "car seat tech"). What do you do when your toddler thinks it’s funny to push his chest clip down, slide his arms out of the straps, and nearly escape while you’re doing 65mph on the highway? And the buckle and chest clip are fairly hard to undo so most kids won't have the finger strength and dexterity to unbuckle either. The seatbelt locks, but the manual implies I need a locking clip anyway because the buckle slides freely?

I am installing the Evenflo Maestro Sport as a 5 pt harness in the third row of a Honda Odyssey with the seatbelt. It's actually located just below the proper chest clip position if you put the harness in the top slots. Mine is older and came with one, but there’s definitely a trend to leave them off as they become less and less necessary (many new European cars have locking seat belts now, and they’ve been standard in the US for 30+ years). This saftey devices covers the reslease button of belt and requires thin object (like key or popsclie stick) to release belt buckle. My son who is a special needs child diagnosed with autism would constantly unbuckle his seat belt while i was driving causes so much distraction not to mention fear for my son safety as i was drving. Don't be tempted to modify the buckle – parents have suggested reversing the buckle so it faces your child's tummy, putting a cover over the buckle or even wrapping it in tape!
