About this deal

It describes the same mixed emotions I got when I saw the Kubrick's groundbreaking movie for the first time.

On the palate, very bright and young with more citrus notes, vanilla, tropical fruits and spice (cumin? We recently took a look at the 2017 amarone release, so there's no time like the present to take a step back to the beginning and take alook at the Arran entry level bottling – the 10 year old. Now I was still a noob (still am) to the full extent of the world wide whisky world then but it seemed to be one of the few rebrands to be accepted with open arms. But it has that complexity there if you want to investigate with a dram and really delve into the flavours on offer. I was pretty happy with this too, as lighter malt; will finally post my review, probably in a couple weeks. This is a nod to the pair of golden eagles that built their nest on a cliff near the distillery at the time of construction.

Non chill-filtered and no colour was added, the golden straw colour is the product of a marriage first and second fill bourbon and sherry casks on a 70-30 ratio, or was it 80-20? You hereby represent and warrant that you are authorized to make any Contributions, that your Contributions and the use by us will not infringe or violate the rights of any third party. It goes to show how this presentation of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtering is captivating whisky connoisseurs. The palate offers no surprises, a big cereal bomb with gentle, honey-laced sweetness, a leathery kick on the back end, and a note of tobacco and some pungent green herbs on the finish.

The Isle of Arran 10 Year Old single malt whisky was originally launched in 2006, replaced with a new design and a new recipe in 2019, this 10 year old lies at the heart of the Isle of Arran range and exudes all the honeyed richness we have come to associate with the island distillery. If any new distillery follows the way Lochranza Distillery has gone about making whisky when they started before the modern whisky boom in 1995 i. There is a slight initial hit (for me this hit lasts less than a half second) of seaweed, smoke and salt before the nose settles and becomes fruity (pear-like), with a vanilla sweetness, and the only part of the initial moment that remains is the salt.

I have to note that it is distinctly darker than the last bottle I bought (with the older label and taller bottle). Launched in 2006, it is matured in about 70% second-fill sherry casks, with the remaining 30% split between bourbon and first-fill sherry casks.

But from time to time, I’ll crack open one of the remaining little bottles and sample another malt I’ve probably never tried before. Since my interest in single malt scotch whisky developed a few years ago, that’s the task I’ve essentially been attempting, whether I knew it or not—seek out all of the classic malts, and sample them one by one. Pallet: immediately the honey comes through then vanilla, barley sugar, more savoury herbal notes further develop to relative intensity then fades back to the grass and straw. This has been a joyful experience and I look forward to trying more of what the core range has to offer. One "interesting" correction, which I think few are aware of: the "real" entry-level expression from Arran is the "Arran Original", which comes in a copper container. On the palate, Arran 10 Year is approachable but plenty flavorful, with big, sweet notes of vanilla and juicy orange—the whisky personification of a creamsicle. It’s quite sweet in terms of residual sugar, but not hard to drink, with much more depth than many of the basic 80 or 86 proofers—you really get the sense that the 92 proof helps lift this one above some of its more direct competition.
