The thirty-four Iron Man suits between the Mark LXXXV and its on-screen predecessor, the Mark L, were all simply upgrades to the armor, leading to this one. The suit's Mark number is a reference of the first comic appearance of Iron Man Model IV Armor: Iron Man #85 (1976).
