About this deal

I don’t think they’ve given it a proper name, but they refer to it as an “asynchronous follow-up” system. I’ll explain how it works shortly. The specs feature 30 jewels, a 40 hour power reserve and an accuracy of -15/+30s a day. It’s also nice to see a little perlage finishing on the movement. First of all, note that North America and Europe are not central to this globe, and are, in fact, absent. Instead we see Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, which is fitting for a Chinese watch designed by a Chinese man. I’m all for it, as watchmaking’s tendency toward Eurocentrism has been a kind of pet peeve of mine for a while.

U-Series Blue Planet GPHG Mechanical Watch - CIGA Design

Comparing it to a stone made smooth by erosion seems fitting of the theme. While the case is practically featureless, I think it suits the watch. What makes this design unique is that the time can be read with only one hand. Instead of rotating 360 degrees every hour, the minute ring rotates 390 degrees. This means its origin point, 00, advances with each passing hour. If that sounds confusing, it’s much easier to understand visually. I would’ve loved it if the globe rotated once every 24 hours as well. The rotation would not be accurate to Earth’s actual movement with the vantage point chosen for the Blue Planet, but it would’ve taken the metaphor and the mechanics just that one step further.Origine e Riconoscimenti:** Anche se l'azienda è cinese, questo orologio è un prodotto di livello internazionale. La vittoria del Challenge Watch Prize del GPHG 2021 ne è una chiara testimonianza. I applaud the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) for assuring that the Challenge Prize given to watches under 3500 CHF each year is one of the most exciting categories. I also applaud 2021’s GPHG’s judges for seeing past the typical big brand dazzle and recognizing the accomplishment of China’s CIGA Design in creating the Blue Planet. I think the watch deserves the accolades it got. What Makes It Special The World on Your Wrist - Inspired by "Blue Marble" the first photograph of Earth as a whole taken from space in 1972. Micro-engraved the earth's terrain on the dial, showing natural elements such as land, mountains and oceans. Unique single pointer design, indicating the time in a way that simulates the rotation of the earth. Means to awaken people's awareness of protecting the earth's environment. Water Resistant - Suitable for daily use. Splash/rain resistant. Not available for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, diving, fishing, and water related works. How do you follow up on a hit release as a young watch brand? While established marques have a variety of lines and a rich heritage with which to build upon existing success, the “sophomore album” problem can be a major challenge for a newer watchmaker. This is especially true in the case of CIGA Design. Beyond the need to build upon the foundation of its award-winning core design, the brand has arguably taken up the mantle of delivering innovative Chinese horology to the masses, which only adds to the pressure on its current slate of releases. With this in mind, any follow-up to the 2021 release of the CIGA Design Blue Planet is bound to garner intense enthusiast scrutiny. Rather than resting on its laurels, the brand takes the GPHG-winning base model and adds a new layer of visual drama and material quality. The new CIGA Design Blue Planet – Gilding Version combines an impressively luxe feel with the same unique display as its predecessor, delivering what may well be the Chinese marque’s most compelling offering to date.

CIGA Design Blue Planet - Fratello Watches Hands-On Review: The CIGA Design Blue Planet - Fratello Watches

In summary, don't think twice. If it's in your budget and you enjoy novel and intricate workings, just get it. It's beautiful, it wrks really, really well, it's different, and did I mention it's beautiful? It's beautiful... Just in case I forgot to say so. Enjoy! Ikepod is impossible not to consider when looking at the Blue Planet, as the case shape is simply reminiscent. But I don’t get the sense that this was a matter of imitation as much as a result of a holistic design meant to work with the domed globe around which everything else appears to have been shaped. The flying-saucer shape accommodates the 46mm diameter, which really isn’t so intimidating on my wrist. The soft shape of the case assures a comfy fit, something more like a 42mm watch. The Etched Earth After having the Blue Planet on my wrist for a few days, I found it really comfortable to wear. This is mostly due to the light weight titanium case and the soft and flexible rubber strap. The piece doesn’t look huge on the wrist despite the 46mm case size, as there are no lugs. My only complaint about the watch so far is that the crown is a bit too tight to wind. Although this is not a big issue for an automatic watch, I hope that CIGA may improve the crown winding operation for the future shipments. It’s time to rethink Chinese watches. There is still a cloud that hangs over watches from China, a cloud of dismissive judgment that automatically assumes that if it’s (openly) made in China, it can’t be of any merit. The irony, of course, is that many of the high-end brands we hold dear outsource some or most of their manufacturing to the country. But more and more, Chinese brands are proving those assumptions wrong and demonstrating that the country has horological prowess beyond shadow manufacturing. In fact, brands like CIGA Design are winning awards–and not just participation ribbons. For the incredibly novel CIGA Design Blue Planet watch, the brand was the first Chinese winner of any award at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève—the Oscars of the watch world—beating out the likes of Oris and Doxa to take home the Challenge Award in 2021. Inspired by our responsibility to preserve the world around us, the Blue Planet doesn’t just impress with its three-dimensional representation of our planet—it presents a new way of displaying the time. Under most lighting conditions, it’s not detectable to the naked eye. Still, since I did notice it, I thought it worth mentioning. Movement Design & Materiali: Questo orologio è un capolavoro di dettagli e artigianato. Con una cassa in ceramica elegante e un quadrante dorato elaborato con micro-incisioni e doratura 24K, è come indossare un pezzo d’arte al polso. CIGA, which stands for Chinese International Great Art, has won several design awards in their relatively short career. Looking at their catalog, they seem to have a penchant for skeletonized designs. The ceramic strap comes with a push-button butterfly clasp. Modern design ergonomically frees every move on your wrist.

Characterize a sporty yet stylish silicone strap, and a smooth skin-friendly ceramic strap with luster. Naturally complements the dial and can be dressed up or down. Fine Craftsmanship - The sleek oval case design without lugs commands attention and is comfortable to wear. The tightly sealed crown ensures added protection against the elements and smooth winding. Fluoro-rubber strap, which is unaffected by temperatures and resistant to abrasions and corrosion. Unlike silicone strap, it stays clean and keeps dust particles away. Innovative Time Telling - When the hour hand rotates 30°, the minute hand rotates 390°. This innovative change in the gear ratio of the traditional movement means the watch can indicate both the hour and minute with a single pointer. This ingenious solution transforms the conventional way of time-telling.I quite like this decentralized view of the planet, as the design may have come off as cheesy, were it a stereotypical framing of the Earth’s continents. Challenge Watch Prize Winner of the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève - The GPHG has long been acclaimed as the watchmaking industry's highest honor. It's an annual competition involving several hundreds of watches marketed during the year. The case is made of more expensive and more environmentally friendly recycled titanium material. Reduce carbon pollution, contribute your effort to protect our blue home. The case is polished and brushed to present a beautiful glossy texture.

The outer ring is stationary and displays the 12 hour layout, with each hour subdivided by 5 minute markers. The globe acts as a typical hour hand, rotating 30 degrees every hour. As far as aesthetics go, you’ll either love it or hate it. Personally, I think the watch is quite a pretty sight, but the innovative design comes with its own set of problems.

Included is a matte blue fluoro rubber strap. FKM is a high density rubber known for its durability against harsh temperatures and chemicals while being soft and supple. On the wrist, it’s perfectly comfortable. A feminine evolution inspired by the CIGA Design Blue Planet, the Challenge Watch Prize Winner of 2021 GPHG Imagine everyone’s surprise in 2021, when Chinese brand CIGA Design was announced the winner of the Challenge Watch category of GPHG - The first-ever Chinese watch company to win. In the world of Swiss Watchmaking, it’s almost expected that a Swiss or Japanese brand would win any or all of the GPHG Awards, but CIGA beat them at their own game with the lovely Blue Planet - And man do we love it. In 2021, CIGA won their first ever watchmaking award at the Swiss GPHG (Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève).
