About this deal

There’s a real film noir feeling to the game, too, which helps draw out the theme. Just be careful if you’re the murderer, as any self-reflective monologues breaking the third wall might give away the game. How to Play Deception: Murder in Hong Kong Setup Three teams are competing for the title of fastest gun in the West: a sheriff with deputies, outlaws who want to bring down the sheriff and ruthless renegades who just want to be the last one standing. Only the sheriff is known at the start of the game, leading to unpredictable fights straight out of a western, with players teaming up then double-crossing one another. In your first game, it is recommended to assign the role of the "Forensic Scientist" to the most expressive player. 3. Badge Tokens Most notable, though, are the three new role cards: the Lab Technician, Protective Detail, and the Inside Man. The flow of the game remains the same, but players now have new powers, which can greatly up the angst in the room.

The group discussion and theorizing that underpins it can be extremely engaging, and especially rewarding for those that like to use their imagination. One Night Ultimate Werewolf distils the original social deduction experience of classic Werewolf (also known as Mafia) into a fast and fun 10-minute game that doesn’t need a large group. By condensing the action into just one round, the game removes the need for either a referee or player elimination, meaning no-one has to miss out on the action. Designed by Rikki Tahta, the maker of Coup, and continuing his spree of bluffing-based board games, The Chameleon is a brilliant party game. At the start of a round, players all receive the same secret word, except for one who becomes the titular chameleon. Going around the table, everyone gives a vague one-word clue related to the secret answer. The chameleon must try to blend in, figuring out the hidden word while giving their own clue and avoiding being unmasked as a cold-blooded, fly-eating imposter. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a social deduction game for four-to-twelve players. You are a team of investigators and have arrived at the scene of a murder. There’s just one big problem: the killer is among you, but no one else knows their identity! Did I mention that everyone only gets one actual guess at the right answer? That’s necessary to make the game somewhat challenging, but it makes the guessing to game time ratio very small compared to its peers. In Codenames your team gets a handful of guesses over a 10-15 minute game. In Mysterium each person gets about 7 guesses in a 45 minute game. Deception gives everyone one guess in 20 minutes of playtime at a minimum, depending on how much discussion you allow. Subtle Investigation If you’re a fan of social deduction games, Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a no brainer to add to your list. It plays brilliantly well, pulling out all my favorite facets of a social deduction game: wild theories, impassioned speeches, betrayal, deep discussion, and a whole load of making up to do at the end.

A Fake Artist Goes to New York takes the imposter-hunting formula and spices things up with a splash of Pictionary, resulting in an easy-to-learn game of deception that’s more family-friendly than most.

The first time I played Deception was with 12 players at SaltCon earlier this year. It was a blast. The amount of cards to consider goes up considerably with more players, but it makes for some fun discussions. Overall, though, it’s incredibly fun and probably one of the best social deduction games out there. Players of all experience levels can’t help but get drawn into the theorizing, and it’s incredibly easy to learn, making it a great option for a mixed group. It’s not because the game is a short game. Rather it’s because everyone has enjoyed it so much that we just have to play “one more time.”
