As I made my way deeper into the 1980s, though, I was faced with some big decisions. Do I include Excalibur in this reading project? If so, should I read Captain Britain before I start Excalibur? I mean, this is a fairly complete readthrough, and it does seem like Captain Britain’s pre- Excalibur story is probably at least somewhat important. So I answered “Yes” to both of those questions. I will read Exalibur, and I’ll read Captain Britain’s 1970s and 1980s runs first. One of the first of the Corps to encounter Mad Jim Jaspers on his return, who transformed him into a Fury. In the main continuity of Marvel Comics, three characters have used the Captain Britain title in regular publication. For 2023, I'm hoping to see Betsy reconnect with the rest of her friends on Krakoa - it's been way too long since she's had any meaningful interaction with the likes of Storm and Wolverine and the Fall of X might be a good place to start.

There is a minor bit of weirdness in the 2021 edition of this Captain Britain Omnibus, the apparent writing out of Alan Moore as significant player in the commentary despite Moore producing the most impressive run of issues in the eventual development of the 'Jaspers Warp' story line. Both Alan Davis' Forward and Jim Krueger's Afterwards and Afterwords contain the same cryptic 'Edited for Content' which may or may not be relevant. Maybe it was a matter of squabbles over 'unpaid invoices' surviving forty years on. Who knows and who honestly cares any more? Not seen, only mentioned as being present. Presumably died along with the majority of the Captain Britain Corps members present for the battle against Mad Jim Jaspers. So, this book is like a snapshot of a culture when it was still possible to be anti-facist, patriotic and good, a self-questioning fighter against intolerance, all at the same time, before cultures started to divide. He is still in the top 100 in terms of aesthetic appreciation but not popularity. Captain America #305-306. These last couple of issues are mainly a waste. They’re a couple of big fights whose only value is to introduce Mordred the Mystic to the Britain mythology [4/10].Also a member of Calibur alongside that dimension's versions of Spider-Girl, Iron Fist, Hulk and Dr. Strange. She was sometimes known as Captain Saxonia. From a British perspective, I suppose we can see 'Captain Britain' as a noble failure and, if we were sour, as both the product and victim of American cultural colonialism. But the core story line stands and could even have future legs under a serious creative hand who could escape the 'woke'. DAREDEVILS #1-11, MIGHTY WORLD OF MARVEL (1983) #7-16, CAPTAIN BRITAIN (1985) #1-14 and MARVEL TALES (1964) #131-133 – plus MARVEL TEAM-UP (1972) #65-66, NEW MUTANTS ANNUAL #2 and X-MEN ANNUAL (1970) #11.

I get Thor, Avengers and New Avengers as HC, Hawkeye as TP ( but that run is over, just missing 1 TP) and Remender's Uncanny Avengers as Omnibus. Material from Captain Britain (Vol. 1) #1-2, Marvel Team-Up (Vol. 1) #65-66, Hulk Comic #1, #3-5, #57-59, Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman. When Moore leaves (over 'unpaid invoices'?) the series weakens substantially but that does not make it bad just a little less interesting and more episodic. Eventually it declines into an X-men 'riff' on intolerance as the logic of Moore's world is explored to its natural limits. Lew Stringer has shared the covers for the Captain Britain Omnibus, coming in October, plus a list of the comics it reprints. Be all that as it may, although an incomplete representation of Britain's answer to Captain America, this Omnibus has enough to provide sufficient lore, to show a distinctive British tone to the hero and to mark out the character as Marvel UK rather than Marvel stateside. Moore bridges the early contradictions by making Captain Britain a determined fighter against fascism and intolerance while retaining his link to Albion. Grant Morrison subverted this with a prose horror story about Captain Gran Bretan (1986) where the magic is malign. Super Spider-Man & Captain Britain #231-#253 (all B&W, #247-#253 is a reprint of MTU #65-#66) - this series was originally "Spider-Man Comics Weekly"

Captain Britain Omnibus covers and contents revealed

Following the sale of Marvel UK to Panini in 1995, the character turned up in several new stories in both Marvel Heroes and Spectacular Spider-Man Vol 1, which are not regarded as a part of official Marve continuity. One of these was, however, later reprinted in the US as Marvel Milestones: Captain Britain Vol 1 1. In 2006, Panini UK (who had already reprinted some of the Captain's adventures in their revived version of Mighty World of Marvel) began a series of collected editions reprinting all of the Captain's UK-published adventures in sequence for the first time, five volumes in all: Captain Britain: Birth of a Legend (2006), Captain Britain: A Hero Reborn (2007), Captain Britain: The Lion & the Spider (2009), Captain Britain: The Siege of Camelot (2010) and Captain Britain: Endgame (2011). Two oversized hardcover collections for the American market followed, using the titles of the first and fourth collected editions. The 21st issue of The Classic Marvel Figurine Collection magazine was also devoted to Captain Britain, and included a metal figurine of him in his Alan Davis-created second costume. A Captain Britain Omnibus published in 2009 reprinted every Captain Britain story from 1981-1986 plus a variety of extra material in a huge hardcover volume, and in October 2016, Captain Britain: Legacy of a Legend reprinted selected strips from 1976-1986 as a celebration of forty years of the Captain. Not only is this omnibus a good place to start reading Captain Britain comics, but I think it’s the best place. This massive tome starts at the very beginning and collects pretty much every appearance of the character before Excalibur (with the odd exception of those Captain America issues).Today, Captain Britain is possible but problematic. To be true to his creation could place him unwittingly somewhere on the nice side of the national populist camp but to deny his 'national meaning' could be to make him a laughable 'woke' nonentity, an add-on to a plethora of US heroes. He is a creature very much of the early 1980s where there were genuine fears of fascist takeover. Political themes are surprisingly dominant even after Thorpe was displaced for being too political (ironically) by the perhaps more subtle Moore. Ok I'm lying—the omnibus actually ends with two Captain America issues guest starring Captain Britain and one of his old baddies, but these are on the whole pretty forgettable. Marvel Super-Heroes (UK) #377-#388 (Alan Moore's run begins in #387) - this series was originally "The Mighty World of Marvel" By the time this run wrapped up, Captain Britain was finally starting to gain some popularity — enough that he got a new serial in Marvel Super-Heroes. This is when Alan Davis began his work on the series (he draws almost the entire rest of the book), and Cap got a new costume (the one shown on the front cover of the omnibus).
