About this deal

But a hero’s journey is rarely one and done, and I loved watching Arek navigate his new reality, working fairly impressively to restore the kingdom to rights, with the support and guidance of his most trusted companions and dearest friends, Matt the mage, Rion the knight, Lila the rogue, Sionna the warrior, and Bethany the bard. the blurb that describes it as 'carry on' crossed with arthurian legend? spot on. the writing style reminded me of 'carry on' so much that i very much wondered if i was reading merthur fanfiction towards the beginning. i have literally never read a more accurate description, which is funny because a lot of newer ya fantasy novels are compared to older, more popular ones and usually end up disappointing, usually because what we get isn't what we were promised. Happily Ever After by Kiera Cass | Goodreads

I think my expectations were gearing up towards a romcom so this may have caused my rating to be a tad lower since I was expecting more romance. I loved the cultural aspect of the sister's Filipino heritage and the wedding planning. Also, the family dynamics was also very good but I was really wanting more romance. I feel like this was. a disappointment and the romances were missing. The Key to Happily Ever After is one of the best women’s fiction I have read this year & to top , it is set in Washington DC one of my fav places. A wonderful story about the de la Rosa sisters Mari, Jane & Pearl who have recently inherited the family business of wedding planning from their mother so there is a some chaos with managing the finances to keep the business successfully running then there are things unraveling at their personal front, their differences since its not easy to work together without clashing but the interest of the family & the business as to come first. I love how Tif Marcelo has knitted this story keeping the main focus on the sisters, their bond, will they be able to come together in this crisis despite their conflicts & how will they get through it writing an happily ever after for each other. as for the magic, however, i was seriously expecting more. it's never explained how it works-not just matt's magic but also the magic binding arek to the throne—all that we know is that it works, no explanation. i think it would have been interesting if this was delved into more, or even just expressed in scenes where magic was being performed in general. The romance had me in a chokehold from the start. If I haven’t implied it a thousand times in this review alone, best-friend-to-lovers is my absolute favourite romance trope, so I was bound to love Matt and Arek fiercely. Their opposing personalities made their dynamic all the more interesting, with Arek being impulsive and sarcastic, while Matt was his counterpart, responsible and put-together. The miscommunication trope is rampant, relied upon to drive the conflict between Matt and Arek, though I found I was surprisingly unbothered by it, too swept up in the whimsy of the story as a whole. Arek and Matt were wonderful characters and I adored their love story, but I also absolutely loved their other friends, who were all fantastic characters their own right, supporting, confiding and challenging Arek at every necessary turn of his new reign.but it was more like a comedy Romance drama in a fantasy land with magic, not having much exciting events of a Fantasy adventurous story Happy Ever After by Paul Dolan is a book about uncovering myths about a perfect life. These myths, also known as the happiness narrative, are what we tend to think what makes us happy, but often we are better off abandoning this narrative. so this is ever after, however, completely omits the 'adventure' that occurred and which brought all of the main characters together, choosing to instead give snippets of recollections of their adventures together occasionally throughout the book. it takes the epilogue, showing all of the characters happy and successful, and builds on it instead, telling us about what it took to get there, and i adored that. However, the book largely falls apart in the final section, Responsible. Here, we learn about 3 additional "social narratives": Altruism, Health, and Free will. The psychological studies cited here are all incredibly sketchy and have inconsistent results - as the author freely admits.

That change flipped the typical dynamic on its head, which I greatly enjoyed, as I'm not sure I've ever seen that approach in a romance before, so that fresh take was kind of cool. we're not told what time period this book is set in—or even if it would translate to a real world time period seeing as to how it's fantasy—but i found it a bit strange how formally some of the characters would speak compared to arek, the main one, like he'd transmigrated from the modern world into the world of a fantasy novel. clearly i've been reading too many webtoons lately. Interesting. Behavioural scientist Paul Dolan here aims to put together something which takes a utilitarian view of human sociology, especially with regards happiness. He groups his thoughts into three sections (each of three subjects) dealing with the themes of wealth/success, love/family, and self-determination, and asks us to reject the common (Western) narratives for each, which might be making us unhappy. This is a must-read for fans of T.J. Klune’s Tales from Verania series (just way more YA in vibe), bringing a quirky, lovable cast of found-family characters to the forefront of a delicious fantasy world setting, that mixes the fun and adventure perfectly with some emotionally gripping high-stakes and a heart-melting romance (or two, or three). One of the most rigorous articulations of the new mood of acceptance...a persuasive demolition of many of our cultural stories about how we ought to live' Oliver Burkeman, Guardian I have noted this smaller self-consciousness in working-class children who are not brought up to be as individualistic and secure individuals as middle-class children are. The friends-to-lovers, pining from afar, SLOW BURN romance, was enough to make my cold and withered heart grow three sizes before all was said and done. The miscommunication not bothering me the way it often does, proving again that it can work really well in any story when executed correctly.

There were a few glimpses of things that I thought - "now this is interesting" but they passed and in the main I found the book unappealing. If you are going to be writing a thesis I can imagine you will find plenty of material to quote in this book. If you are just someone interested in being happier maybe look up the art of hygge! A passionate, provocative book. It isn't just a self-help book. It is a manifesto for a better society' Sunday Times A just-enough approach has some similarities with the concept of 'satisficing', a rule for decision-making that involves searching the available options only until one of them meets an acceptable threshold. This is in contrast to 'maximizing', which is a standard assumption in economics. Maximizing involves searching until very best option is identified by a process of elimination."

The book is organized into three sections: Reaching, Related, and Responsible. In Reaching, Dolan steps through the associations of happiness with education and career choices. In Related, he examines the correlations with items such as marriage and children. there were two dorks who saved the kingdom but didn't know they have feelings for each others or how to express them. Unsurprisingly this part revelas that in fact we are more driven by context, environment and genes than we would like to accept. There isn't much free will. I do not agree with this. But for me, this is a super stimulating claim even in the area of general motivation. Wouldn't we all be better off if we gave up hope and accepted where we are and what we have? But what would motivate us then? Maybe ambitions, which are better than hope, because they can not be let don't???
