About this deal

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a beginners look at oceanic pollution. This book is not too overwhelming, but does not water down it's subject, pun intended. This book doesn't blame the reader, but warns them of the harmful effects of plastic waste. As the movie isn’t out yet it’s unclear whether Sharp is actually there or a figment of Ashcraft’s imagination. Thanks, I'll just add this to the other couple dozen terrifying accounts of sharks from books I've read, and be fearful of swimming in deep ocean water forever.] So in the end she had enough water, and should have had even more—a boat that size must have a few hundred gallons of fresh water. Rich people probably expect to have two fresh water showers a day in such a luxury craft. What at first seemed like a good business decision for a couple as much in love with sailing as they were with each other soon became a nightmare.

Closer to 2.5 stars. I saw the movie and wanted to read the book to see what was left out. Honestly, I feel like the movie is better than the book. At least, it adapted the material in a good way. misleading story about America's social ills. On second read, I think his use of data is actually pretty fair and contributes more-or-less well to his argument; the problem is, Galloway does a terrible job of actually articulating that argument, constantly getting lost in the weeds. In real life everything was broken, smashed and scattered, the cabin was half-full of water, the masts were broken clear off and the sails were waterlogged and floated useless nearby. The number of young adults who live with their parents is at its highest rate. At the end of the Great Depression, 48% lived with parents, post covid, that number is at 52%. They had decided to take a break from pleasure sailing in Sharp’s 36-foot sailboat and instead take a job delivering a 44-foot yacht from Tahiti to San Diego. The first time I read this book I came away with the impression that Galloway misused data to tell a Social media, for example, makes money when it has our attention. And it does that by appealing to outrage, which drives us apart and harms democratic institutions and norms in the process. In this way, social algorithms inevitably push us to divisive content.

Ehrlich, David (May 31, 2018). " 'Adrift' Review: Shailene Woodley Rescues a True Life Survival Thriller from Drowning at Sea". IndieWire. Penske Business Media . Retrieved May 31, 2018. What I did not like was that it was so short, that she jumped from what was happening on the boat to how she met her boyfriend and such but that is still not a problem. Young and in love, their lives ahead of them, Tami Oldham and her fiancé Richard Sharp set sail from Tahiti under brilliant blue skies, with Tami’s hometown of San Diego as their ultimate destination. But the two free spirits and avid sailors couldn’t anticipate that less than two weeks into their voyage, they would sail directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. They found themselves battling pounding rain, waves the size of skyscrapers, and 140 knot winds. Richard tethered himself to the boat and sent Tami below to safety, and then all went eerily quiet. Hours later, Tami awakened to find the boat in ruins, and Richard nowhere in sight. Here is a helpful through-line for any consumer of Galloway's articles, books, or podcasts: like every person who becomes a master in his field, Galloway is insightful and brilliant when he is operating in that field, and just as clueless as anyone else when operating outside it.But anyway…please, go read this book for yourself. READ THIS BOOK, and encourage others to READ THIS BOOK. But don't do it near an open window, because you might be tempted to jump. All this is fascinating enough but it is the book´s style which, in the end, I didn´t enjoy. Written in the present tense, overwrought, it didn´t, for me, tally with the author´s reflective and moving conclusions drawn in the last chapters.

Only a handful of people in 1990 reported having no close friends or only one friend. By 2021, that had soared to 21 percent of men and 18 percent of women. One final thought, the author DOESN'T really cover here. He notes that one of the most dangerous trends in America is the growing number of undereducated, lonely, poor, angry and terminally single young men. Well, you know who else has that problem? China - and is this really the situation we want in the world's two superpowers as they edge closer and closer to confrontation? Left with only a sextant, a navigational instrument, and a watch to help her navigate the 1,500 miles to Hilo, Hawaii she suffered not just from hunger but also a head injury and a severely damaged boat. It felt mean and unnecessary. My feelings were right cause in the end she wrote about his parents who are English....That they were cold because they did not show their emotions in front of her"That pissed me of to no end. Later she wrote how pissed she was that Richard's brother in law did not want to sell his boat or the price she wanted so apparently there is some bad blood there.Understanding the social situations around us can make us smarter voters and better citizens, able to better deter manipulation by politicians and shady online sources. More understanding can also help us make wise choices in a constantly changing world. Along with her fiancé Sharp, played by Sam Claflin, Ashcraft fought to keep the yacht from sinking. They battled 40 foot waves and 140 knot winds as they tried to run north of Hurricane Raymond.

This true adventure/survival story was almost as good as Kon-Tiki, but it still gets 5 stars from me and placed into my favorite book shelf as did Kon-Tiki. a b c "Experience: I was adrift on a raft in the Atlantic for 76 days". The Guardian. March 23, 2012 . Retrieved May 30, 2018. From that, your takeaway might be that college is a foolish money sink. But a college education is even more key to landing a job now than ever before. If you want to be part of the middle class, you need to find a way to afford college or vocational training. For the next 79 days, he is forced to survive in a small life raft. As survival equipment fails and is repaired becomes less and less reliable, you wonder if he will be able to keep going. Of course you know he does because he lives to write the book. I watched the movie first, and it wasn’t bad at all. In the movie as well as the book she didn’t seem too concerned with bailing the boat out. Just to have something to occupy my time I think that I would have been pumping my brains out as well as cleaning up that cabin to have a more comfortable time of it. The whole bit about rationing water is also lousy information in a survival situation. I was taught at the USAF survival school in Spokane, Washington, to ration your sweat, not your water, meaning to take it easy during the daylight hours but drink as much water as you need. Drinking a cap-full of water every two days like they do in the movies will just dehydrate you faster.Tami Oldham remained unconscious for 27 hours after hitting her head when the boat capsized during the hurricane. The severe head injury is visible on Shailene Woodley's character in the 2018 movie. Part of her ability to ‘move on’ was thanks to writing her story down. She never underwent counselling saying “no one ever suggested it” though she was left wishing someone had. “I definitely had some severe post-traumatic stress syndrome,” she said. “I really wish I had taken the time to do that”.
