About this deal

Today’s particular release is from ten years ago already, so the whisky for this was actually distilled in the early nineties. It is a Double Cask whisky, meaning it matured both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Aberlour 14 Year Old Double Cask has recently joined their core range alongside the 12, 16, and 18 Year Old releases. It is a combination of first-fill American oak (bourbon) casks and Oloroso sherry casks. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a whisky aimed at the mass market and casual drinkers who want to experience the best of the various whisky regions without diving into expensive versions and limited editions. There you find the 'peated' whiskies - which means it is those with a smokier taste. My favourite comes from Laphroaig, a love-it-or-hate-it whisky that tastes a little like smoked ham and can taste a bit like medicine for some. I'll be sharing the bottle at BBQs with others because that is what this Aberlour 14 years whisky is all about - sharing and enjoying. That can't be said of all whiskies, particularly if your friends and family are not single malt drinkers. Whiskybase B.V. The sweetness and richness stretch things out as the individual elements begin to fade - first the honey/toffee, then the green apples, then the dried fruit notes and finally the cereal and baking spice characteristics. There is definitely nothing wrong with Aberlour 14 years Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky. I've been a whisky drinker for several years now but my tastes are pointed towards options from Islay. Aberlour is currently owned by Chivas Brothers, part of the larger Pernod Ricard group who took over the distillery in the 1970s. It has an annual production capacity of 3.8 million litres, although plans are submitted for a major upgrade and expansion. Aberlour sits comfortably within the Top 10 in terms of worldwide single malt sales and market share, being particularly popular in France and the USA.

Once a novelty when The Balvenie started finishing whisky, this is now a very common (almost traditional) procedure that doesn’t really stand out from the crowd. That said, Aberlour has a long history of double maturation so they know what they’re doing. It is as far away from smoky whiskies as you can get. In fact many of the Speyside options are described as fruity and sweet.

Aberlour is a premium entry-level whisky. That basically means it is a perfect whisky for those to try the best that Speyside has to offer while still delivering the taste and flavours of a top quality single malt. While you don’t encounter many Aberlour whiskies from independent bottlers, the distillery itself does release single cask bottlings every once in a while. They do this mostly in collaboration with a third party, in this case La Maison du Whisky, the French retail outlet and importer.
