Power banks and other Li-ion batteries have come under scrutiny pretty recently. As battery technology improved, more and more battery-powered items found their way onboard planes. However, given their relatively unstable nature, accidents were bound to happen. After a series of battery-related incidents, some of them pretty serious, they became a subject of regulation. In the image below you can see the evolution of battery-related incidents on planes. Unfortunately, after just one month of usage, I encountered a significant problem with the power bank. It abruptly stopped providing any power output, rendering it completely useless. This unexpected malfunction left me disappointed and frustrated, as I had relied on the power bank for my charging needs.

Other than that, this is a great power bank for the modern worker who spends a lot of time away from an AC outlet. It's perfect for setting up a temporary office when out and about and offers enough capacity to keep all your devices running throughout the whole day, no matter how hard you use them. Fast Charging Input – The powerbank itself can get charged in 12 to 13 hours as it has Power Delivery Technology which supports 20W fast charging input via Type C port. According to the document “passengers traveling with lithium batteries”, issued on February 2019, power banks are considered spare batteries, which must be individually protected from short-circuiting and carried in carry-on baggage only, regardless of the capacity. It is also stated that each passenger is limited to a maximum of 20 spare batteries of any type without approval, as long as their capacity is below or equal to 100Wh. The operator may approve the carriage of more than 20 batteries. Of course, with the explicit airline permission for each of them, as stated in the previous chapter.

This graph shows that the airline had been implementing these regulations as early as 2015, four years before the IATA document came into effect. In short, power banks are allowed on planes, but they need to be under a specific capacity (100Wh) and they can only be taken in carry-on luggage.

Clearly, though, a plug gives it far more flexibility than the rest of the competition, but if you’re mostly interested in a portable battery charger for your laptop, tablet, smartphone or anything that requires a 5V power supply (like a projector or a computer), then there are far cheaper and more capable models out there. It may not always be stated in the airline’s policy and regulations, but you may find out upon arrival at the airport that the power bank should clearly showcase its capacity to comply with safety regulations.
