About this deal

The offset arm design on the iSteady X doesn’t just help it fold up, but ensures that the gimbal pivots don’t end up in the frame. Moment Mode: Tons of one-tap shooting templates available such as Inception, Dolly Zoom, Motion Timelapse, and panoramic video. It can be rotated to 270°/180° automatically just with one tap. Compatible with phones running iOS 10.0 and Android 6.0 or later. I can’t think of any recent phones that weigh more than the permitted payload, but as you near the limit expect reduced battery life as the motors will have to work harder to compensate. As I said, this isn’t an uncommon issue and I faced the same issue with my ASUS ZenFone 5 and ASUS ZenFone 4. And this problem occurred whether or not my phone was in a case – although they’re usually in a case. The gimbal motors are also dead silent, so you don’t have to worry about unwanted mechanical noises making it into the video (a common issue among early generation gimbals).

It was slightly annoying to have to register the gimbal before I could even commence auto-calibration, but fortunately, you only have to register it once and aren’t prompted to re-register when you use it with a different phone. This means that that the Hohem iSteady X has anti-shake to help keep your device more steady and moving smoothly and also offers auto-rotation. Auto-rotation lets the gimbal know when you’re holding it upside down for those extreme low angle shots without having to get yourself right down onto the ground. It’ll flip your phone over automatically in either horizontal or vertical mode, which can be very useful, especially if you like getting those low down shots on your travels. Object recognition: essentially useless. If the object wasn’t moving or stopped, the camera stopped following and did not recognize upon moving again. I used this function the least because it was not working well. One design feature that is well worth noting is the gimbal design is a little unusual. The 3-axis are mounted with a design that leaves plenty of space for the lenses to be used to full effect.Axis Stabilization: Thanks to its brushless motors and iSteady 4.0 anti-shake algorithm, this 3-axis gimbal provides all-around stability with 320° pan, tilt, and roll rotation. Four follow shot modes, shoot at low angles. So far, the biggest shortfall of these smart gimbals is their software. They have really nicely constructed hardware, and cool software features, but the software does not always work well with various smartphones. Nor do the software features always work consistently. Compared with another phone gimbal that I previously tried (DJI OM 4 - Handheld 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer), I actually like the feel of this one better. That is really more of a personal opinion than anything. They both operate similarly with similar controls.

Usability: the product is easy to use once I figured it out. I have some complications reaching the buttons without adjusting my hands. This could cause a problem, but the stabilization helps a lot. I learned how to use with both hands for fluid footage. The app makes this thing super accessible to everyone. It makes the usability much higher in my opinion. I’ve not tried anything else, so this is my only frame of reference. There are two different timelapse modes. One is just the straight regular “Timelapse” which shoots an image at whatever interval, and the other is the Smart Motion Timelapse, which allows you to combine this interval with a gimbal movement using a set of various options. Both of these modes just spit out a video file, not a series of individual stills. After years of buying different stabilizers—starting with KenLab gyros, then a full Steadicam rig, followed by many motorized gimbals—I have finally found a combination that does everything I want at a price that makes it almost disposable. But this is no toy. One issue with other mobile gimbals is that the gimbal can appear in the footage when switching to the wide-angle lenses. Here Hohem has ensured that even when switched to wide the footage is nice and clear. With the iSteady X, I can shoot using any aspect ratio, resolution and frame rate supported by the camera and get buttery stabilization. This comes in very handy when shooting with the ultra-wide lens, on either phone, since that one does not have any built-in optical stabilization. The improvement in video quality provided by the gimbal is very obvious, even in static handheld shots. If you’re a social media content creator who often generally shoots what’s in front of you rather than using the selfie-camera (although it can do that, too), especially if you do it in vertical mode, then this could be the ideal smartphone gimbal for you, as long as you don’t want to use filters or 3rd party lenses on your smartphone. On arrival, it all looks very smart, and while the material quality might not match that of the DJI OM4, the plastic and finish used all seems solid enough. Inception mode isn’t quite as full-featured as we’ve seen in larger gimbals, but that’s to be expected on a folding smartphone gimbal. They’re not designed to spin a full 360° in all three axes, but they do have a pretty decent amount of rotation to let you shoot a short inception clip.

If you’re a casual user or someone looking to buy their first phone gimbal, the iSteady X is an excellent choice. It does a fine job of producing silky smooth videos and the app’s various shooting modes means you’re equipped for every situation. The calibration process takes around 30 seconds and the LED lights on the front panel of the gimbal will stay flashing until the process is complete. I’d recommend placing the gimbal on a flat surface using the included tripod to balance it properly. Controlling The iSteady X The iSteady X has an 8-hour battery life. The 18650 li-ion 2000mAh/3.7v battery doesn’t last as long as the DJI OM4 or Zhiyun Smooth Q2 but is still plenty for most users. However, while the overall motion and smoothness of the footage were good, I noticed that each time I started to move, it took the gimbal a few moments to settle in. Not too much of an issue, but just something to note.At present, countless mobile gimbal stabilisers will do this, so to stand out, Hohem the manufacture of the iSteady X has had to do something unique. This is a common issue on some phone and gimbal combinations, so it’s nice that I didn’t encounter anything getting in the way of the shot across the three phones I tested the gimbal with. While the stabilisation is generally good, there were a few moments where the motors are slow to respond, and even putting the response speed too fast doesn’t correct this. Longer Battery Life: Standby for about 9 hours. Additionally, it can act as an emergency power bank for smartphones and other devices with its bidirectional charging capability.
