About this deal

Why did the witch let the animals on her broom? Would you have made room on the broom for the animals? Look at the rhyming words in the book. Is there a pattern to the rhyming? Can you think of other words that rhyme? Although Juneaux is only 12 weeks she really seemed to enjoy the rhythm of the rhymes in the book. Also it seemed to be just the right length as she was able to enjoy the whole story before losing interest. Good reading practice for Mummy too as some of the rhymes were real tongue twisters! Julia Donaldson’s wonderful children’s book, told in rhyme, is a story of friendship, sharing, and kindness that would be great to read aloud with young children! In addition, several parts had me laughing out loud. Axel Scheffler’s illustrations greatly enhance the story too!

All of the animals in the story help the witch. Students can have discussions about why we help others. Why did the animals return the witch’s belongings? It could be that the animals care for the well-being of the witch. Or could it be that the animals have a self-interest to go on the broom? Could it be both? Is one reason better or worse as motivation to help others? Read the description of the ‘horrible beast’ that rises from the ditch and use it to draw the creature. In this much-loved picture book, a little mouse walks through the woods and encounters a fox, an owl and a snake. Animated film based on the wonderful children's picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs.

Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers.

It's a perfect tale of helping strangers as a kind witch invite various new friends onto her broom after having lost her hat, plait and and wand in a storm. From former Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson and longtime collaborator Axel Scheffler comes this much-loved tale about a witch and her gang of friends.

I wanted to write about a witch, and I asked myself, “Why do witches always have a cat? Why not some other animals as well?” Following the resounding success of my Locus Quest, I faced a dilemma: which reading list to follow it up with? Variety is the spice of life, so I’ve decided to diversify and pursue six different lists simultaneously. This book falls into my BEDTIME STORIES list. I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise. Mary and I would argue about which of us would marry him).

But after a while, the wind starts playing havoc and every now and then, some thing or the other goes flying off the broom, which causes them to make many pit stops! But at every stop they make a new friend, who wants to tag along, and the witch obliges, much to the chagrin of her cat! Fantastic book defo mummys favourite! We love the rhyming in and my little girl (10 months) loves it if you put on different accents for the different characters and do the sound effects too. The story really flows making it easy to remember so you can really get into it and act it out.
