About this deal

The caramel has depth and character and as well as interacting with the fruits it also bounces off the whiff of smoke drifting across the taste buds. The tang and the smooth caramel come together perfectly and also contribute to an easy-going mouth feel.

Scapa Glansa Scotch Whisky : The Whisky Exchange

There are plenty of peaches and apples with the tell-tale zest of oranges and lemons. These give way to an oaky flavour that brings in some caramel and vanilla charm. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie.Smoke, Dirty Earth, Vanilla, Raw Meat, Resin, Banana, Oak, Tobacco, slightly Sour Grapes, Caffe Latte and Aniseed. The Scapa Glansa first matured in 1st fill American oak casks before being finished in casks that previously held peated whisky. The result is the first ever (lightly) peated whisky from Scapa. The core products of the distillery are currently Skapa Skiren (matured in American first fill oak casks) and Skapa Glansa (a lightly smoked peat whisky). Skapa Glansa was launched in 2016 and is a no age statement whisky. [11] See also [ edit ] Scapa pride themselves on their dedication to traditional distilling and are one of the few manually run distilleries around today.

In November 2009, a 16 years old Scapa whisky was released, with an extra two years in first fill American oak casks. [9] The 16-year-old was discontinued in 2016. Scapa Whisky | Scapa The Orcadian

A much loved old discontinued expression from the other Orkney distillery, Scapa. Replaced briefly (and unsuccesfully) by a 14 year, an excellent 16 year followed before the distillery moved to NAS expressions. With that in mind, they have recently released their first peated expression, Scapa Glansa. The name comes from Old Norse for shining storm laden skies and captures the unique history of the isle of Orkney, with its Viking past as well as the stormy spirit inside the bottle. To be honest I struggle to detect any smoke or peat, however it has a very pleasant balance and is well made. Price is fair, this is much better than (for instance) Highland Park 12, but obviously cannot match HP 18 which sells at 2.5 x the price. Shame Scapa is 16 no long made. Light, Young, Waxy, Sweet and Fruity. A few Floral notes as well. The influence of the Peated Whisky cask Finish is rather limited. The Fruit Flavours are a bit Artificial like in Candies.

The Scapa whisky distillery had been distilling since long before, having been founded by Macfarlane and Townsend in 1885. The little huddle of buildings lies just outside of Kirkwall at Scapa Bay, and the distillery draws its waters from the Lingro Burn. Scapa distillery is decidedly small with a total capacity of one million litres annually, though the distillery runs at roughly one third of this with a staff of just three, working three days weekly. Hiram Walker acquired the distillery in 1954 and installed a Lomond still a few years later to replace the wash still. The Lomond still is a comparatively recent innovation and produces a heavier, oilier spirit. This is the fourth Single Malt Whisky which I tasted at the Beyond Islay tasting event hosted by Ryan Engen who is the Director of Spirits, for Liquor Stores N.A. Inc. at the Edmonton Wine and Beyond McTagggert Ridge location. At the tasting I enjoyed 7 different Single Malts in what was termed the Beyond Islay Single Malt Whisky Tasting. The Whiskies at the tasting were selected to represent the diversity of Scotland’s Island Whiskies reaching beyond the popular Islay Whiskies to the malts produced on the lesser known Islands. Scapa Glansa continues our exploration of the Island of Orkney in the north of Scotland. Scapa…I only reviewed two expressions so far, both independent bottlings. The best one was definitely the Scapa 1988 from Gordon & MacPhail.

This creates richness and depth, with notes of warm, heather honey and soft fruits giving way to a subtle smoky finish. The smoke is dense but not overwhelming, allowing the other flavours to show themselves fully. It is soft and warm, making this the perfect malt for cold, winter nights. Both whiskies on the table today are NAS expressions (“ageless” they say). Yet they’re not particularly cheap. Scapa Glansa (named after the Old Norse word for shining storm-laden skies) was launched in September, 2016. It was produced by a team of six persons (including the Master Distiller) working in the small, manually operated Scapa distillery. The expression was created by taking the signature Scapa malt, which is aged in American Oak casks, and further resting it in peated casks.
