About this deal

The Immortal Attraction of Highlander’ is an interesting retrospective of the film and manages to assemble many of the most important people, both from in front of the camera and behind. Cast interviewees include Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown, Roxanne Hart, and Beatie Edney. In addition, there are insights from Gregory Widen the writer, Michael Kamen the music supervisor, and quite a few others, including director Russell Mulcahy. A SteelBook Edition will be released in France later this year, with standard editions being released in Australia and New Zealand.

Absolutely amazing. 4K picture quality is far better than any blu ray release I've seen. Some people don't like the artwork on the steelbook but I love it. STUDIOCANAL owns one of the largest film libraries in the world, boasting nearly 7000 titles from 60 countries. Spanning 100 years of film history. 20 million euros has been invested into the restoration of 700 classic films over the past 5 years. Highlander is one of my all-time favourite films and so when I was offered the chance to not only review the 4K version of the film, but to also get my hands on the collectors edition, I literally jumped at the chance. Russell Mulcahy’s music video writ large starring a Scot pretending to be a Spanish Egyptian and a Swiss Frenchman pretending to be a Scot transcends every part of its subjectively flawed DNA to become and remain an all-time classic.

Bookmarked this to watch on Netflix as its just appeared but think I will wait for a better version. I'm not expecting a George Lucas styled intervention just fix what they didn't have time to fix in that one scene.

For those new to the fictional fantasy world, the story flips between 1985 New York and 16 th century Scotland. We start in the former where the last remaining immortals are gathering to fight to be the last to survive but, the thing is, only decapitation can take these individuals out of the existence so your basic stabbing or shooting isn’t going to do it. The opening sequence shows us Connor in an epic Car Park sword fight before eventually killing another one of these ‘immortals’ and once dead, he also takes his energy or soul… I would conclude. Thus setting us up for what to expect from future battles. It was the original Highlander movie that started it all. After this film became a cult hit, it would inspire many sequels to come over the years between 1991 and 2007. There was also an animated movie along with some animated shows. Meanwhile, there has been talk of the franchise getting rebooted with The Witcher and Man of Steel star Henry Cavill taking the lead role. No matter what happens with the franchise next, however, there will always be many fans who will be most fond of the original movie. The Blu-ray special features will also include an audio commentary with director Mulcahy. The Blu-ray will also feature several other special features, such as an interview with Mulcahy, an interview with Christopher Lambert, a "The Making of Highlander" featurette, deleted scenes, an archival interview with Christopher Lambert, and a trailer for the film. For the very first time I got the subtle hint that the lady who was Nash's secretary was also the little girl he saved in WWII. In fact, I had forgotten all about that scene of him in WWII, but I am a forgetful person. A certified ‘80s cult classic, the film was directed by Russell Mulcahy ( Swimming Upstream, The Real McCoy) and stars Christopher Lambert ( Mortal Combat, Fortress), Sean Connery ( James Bond), Clancy Brown ( The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers) and Roxanne Hart.Years later, he is met by Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), a swordsman who teaches MacLeod the truth about himself, he is immortal; one of a race of many who can only die when the head is cut from the body. He must fight his way through the centuries until the time of The Gathering, when the few immortals who have survived the ages will come together to fight until only one remains. In New York City the final fight is about to begin, and in the end, there can be only one. And Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Neil Jordan’s Mona Lisa (1986), as recently-released on Blu-ray by our friends at The Criterion Collection. And Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Gordon Hessler’s The Oblong Box (1969), an American International Pictures film on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. The steelbook itself is fantastic with some wonderful artwork from Matt Ferguson, the actual 4k presentation is brilliant and the sound, although it's not Atmos or DTS:X is still great.

And while we still have little in the way of official announcements at the moment, I can confidently report that at least some of titles you’re waiting for are on the way in 2020. I was waiting patiently for this title to be transferred to 4K and I was disappointed with the results. And Tim has posted his thoughts on Jeffrey Obrow and Stephen Carpenter’s The Kindred (1987), now available in a new Special Edition Blu-ray release from Synapse Films. As for today’s release news, let’s start with the big announcement up front: Lionsgate has just officially set Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander: Director’s Cut (1986) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 12/13, just as we expected. IIRC StudionCanal (or Canal+ Image as they were known then) had nothing to do with wire removal around 2000 and that was just some lo-fi DVD releases in the USA.

Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Gaspar Noe’s intriguing and doubly-experimental Lux Aeterna (2019) on Blu-ray from Yellow Veil Pictures via Vinegar Syndrome. fondly and rightly remembered as something of a genre classic. Although which genre is anyone’s guess. Finally, the other star is Queen. Their EP’s worth of songs providing so much of that emotional heart of the film, it's difficult to see how the Highlander we know would work anywhere near as well without their contribution. And credit to all involved for allowing their songs to be an essential part of the narrative, the lyrics literally telling and selling the story in a way that feels part of the very fibre of the film and more effectively than any line of dialogue, not matter how expertly crafted. Featuring an unforgettable original score by Michael Kamen and Queen, HIGHLANDER went on to inspire four further sequels and a television series.

Compare all the previous Blu-ray releases of Highlander to this new collector’s edition and you’ll be pleased to see that this release compiles previous features and adds four new featurettes, including an hour-long documentary comprised of interviews with cast and crew. The Immortal Attraction of Highlander is that hour-long doc and has a treasure trove of facts of and opinions on the film, in particular Clancy Brown shows up energetic and self-effacing when talking about his work, adding to the sheer joy that this genre classic has clearly brought out of people since its theatrical release. It’s a really pleasing documentary and Mulcahy is still so passionate about the film, which comes across clear as day here. For fans of the film, I think you’ll be really pleased with this feature. The information in today’s post should be considered unofficial until the studios in question make their actual announcements. But we believe it to be a reliable gauge of titles currently in the production pipeline or planning stages. All right, folks. This will be our last post until Wednesday next week, as it’s not only the long Labor Day weekend here in the States but by wife and I are also celebrating our thirty-second wedding anniversary. So we’re going to take a little time to relax here in sweltering-in-a-heatwave Southern California. One of Highlander’s defining features is that it has always looked terrible. Even the Blu-ray was a muddy, murky affair. Therefore, the UHD transfer is a miracle. While in itself the presentation can be inconsistent, especially in a level of grain occasionally smoothing out, it still looks like a different, fresher film. The opening and subsequent scenes in the underground garage are sharp and full of detail in shadows. All the modern day sequences respond well to a 4K brush up, detail in faces and textures is enhanced beautifully. Effects shots have survived surprisingly well and actual sparks can be appreciated in the sword battles. Hope you’re all having a great week so far. I was buried in catch-up work yesterday after having a series of family visits here—our first in two years due to the pandemic—so suffice it to say that there was no news post yesterday.
