WalkThrus is an external, online platform that provides teaching focused strategies, broken down into granular steps, that complement our approach to developing High Quality Learning Environments in all our schools. This phase is the mature long-term state you reach when, typically, you will have teachers well-versed in the WalkThrus techniques, using them successfully in their routine classroom practice. However you will always have new staff joining and some colleagues who will need some additional support. Meridian Learning offers a flexible and inclusive learning approach, with an evolving blend of pre-recorded online learning sessions and interactive Microsoft Teams webinars, so our staff can curate a personalised programme of professional learning. Alternatively, this programme would also be suitable for teachers looking to get the best out of their students and work towards mastery. Sessions will include Create opportunities for colleagues to engage in rich conversations and reflection about how to improve practiceThis dynamic mix ensures that our colleagues can access valuable content at their convenience while also enjoying the benefits of collaborative virtual sessions. Scope out your programme for the year ahead, ring-fencing the time that leaders and teachers will need to run training, coaching and team meetings. Each session is focused on one area of practice and the strategies that have the highest leverage in the classroom. These strategies will provide a reference point for reflection and support discussion about the ‘best bets’ for teaching in participants’ particular contexts followed by time to implement and embed these in their practice. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to hear from other professionals from across the region about how they’ve used WalkThrus to transform practice in their classroom. Working across a system of sixty schools, WalkThrus has transformed teachers’ approach to their craft. It has provided professionals at every level with the shared language and understanding to improve teaching, giving teachers the power of ‘how’. WalkThrus is a keystone of our self-improving system.’
All modules have been selected or developed by colleagues across Meridian Trust and are bespoke to the needs of the Trust and those working in or supporting our SEN, primary and secondary schools.These could apply to your whole school or college, each team or individual. Include your staff in the selection process: It’s important for teachers to work on techniques which solve problems that they themselves recognise. I have two quibbles with the book but neither is worth demoting it from a solid five-star rating. The subtitle, Five-step guides to instructional coaching doesn’t quite capture its full breadth and scope for teachers generally. More importantly perhaps, while colleagues who teach younger children will benefit from the vast majority of the WalkThrus, I struggled to find specific examples that primary teachers would directly identify with. That seems an unfortunate oversight and an easy bias to have remedied. Following the break-out success of Teaching WalkThrus Volume 1 (2020) and Volume 2 (2021), Tom Sherrington and Oliver Caviglioli present the third instalment of their five-step instructional coaching techniques.
