About this deal

Přijde mi, že mi s každou další přechutnávkou chutná víc a víc. Výraznější dochuť by z něj udělala supernovu... Ron Barceló’s rum origins date to 1929 when Julián Barceló arrived in the Dominican Republic from Spain with the aim of creating the best rum in the world. The next year, Barceló & Co was founded, and production and commercialisation began. However, it was not before 1950, after years of experimentation, that the brand really positioned itself on its local market with two products: Barceló Blanco and Dorado. Pour it into your glass. If not using a coconut, a highball glass is ideal, or something tall and round. This feature was originally published in the November 2021 issue of The Spirits Business magazine. How localised is the production process of Ron Barceló rum? Barceló is the name and brand of a variety of rums from the Dominican Republic produced by Ron Barceló S.R.L. Barceló has its plant and distillery in San Pedro de Macorís. [1] [2] Company history [ edit ] At the end of the day there are a lot of rums on the market that are better than this at a similar price point. Better examples of this style of rum as well such as Don Q Gold or Ron Cubay Anejo. While Brugal have made some impact in the UK – their Anejo is available in a couple of supermarkets now. Bermudez and Barceló continue to be very popular in Spain but have made little inroad into the UK market. Though it’s not aged nearly as long as the previous expression, this one is still top-notch. It contains a blend of rums that are aged for an average of six years. The Dominican environment is hot and humid which does increase the speed of aging. This expression is aged almost entirely in American bourbon barrels which are routinely scraped and re-charred to achieve the optimal flavor. Julian Barcelo emigrated in 1929, moving from Spain to Santo Domingo where he founded Barcelo & Co. He began perfecting his craft before launching the Ron Barcelo label in 1950 which has grown into a well-known Dominican rum, distilled using only 100 percent Dominican sugar cane juice.

The Ron Barceló brand was introduced in 1930 by Spanish immigrant Julian Barceló, domestically Ron Barceló is widely accepted as the market leader. You can find a lot of history on the Barceló and Dominican rum in general at the Dominican Rum Guide.

A history of tradition and constant evolution

Spirits are leaning towards premiumisation, and Barceló rums are a part of this trend. Consumers are beginning to appreciate and demand the organoleptic properties of high-end dark aged rums and different cask-finished rums. Even if we have gained recognition among the rum producers, there is a lot of work to do for consumers to fully recognise the premium rum industry. Vizcaya represents a full product line from Oliver & Oliver, naming this expression after the impressive age of the spirit. It’s aged for an average of 18-21 years in bourbon barrels and is made from fresh cane juice instead of molasses. This rums popularity in Spain is down to its mixability and competive price. The Spanish (like me) really enjoy a rum and cola. In the glass Barceló Anejo reveals itself to be a nice golden/orange colour. The nose is pretty muted and uninspiring. A little alcohol and some light vanilla. There’s nothing wrong with the nose but little to get excited about either. The hydrometer test shows a little added sugar – I don’t think this has much influence it may smooth out some of the rougher edges. It doesn’t detract from this being a more authentic style of rum.

The Brugal family recipes are guarded closely, shared only with trusted family. They are passed down through the generations and anyone who takes on the job of overseeing the process must ensure the traditions of the distillery and their recipes are upheld. Thanks to the careful preparation of each product, adapting to the consumers’ tastes around the world, and to an international marketing strategy, Ron Barceló now reaches countries on five continents. These include competitive markets such as Russia, the United States, Spain, Germany, Czechia, China, Chile, Colombia or Peru. For almost 100 years, Ron Barceló has maintained its status as the Dominicans’ rum, bringing flavours and textures from its country to foreign consumers. The optimum product was obtained by experimenting with different brands on the local market, and in 1950, the Ron Barceló brand was launched with the products Barceló Blanco and Dorado (white and gold rums respectively), which were an immediate success. Some 20 years later, Ron Barceló Añejo (a mature rum), was added to the portfolio. [3] This devilish drink is heavy on the rum – exactly how they like it down there. While it’s softened by sweeter ingredients, you’ll feel the effects sooner rather than later.years later, in 2001, it partnered with a group of Spanish entrepreneurs to create a strategic alliance with the aim of selling products all over the world, with the exception of the Dominican Republic. In 2002, Barceló & Co separated itself of its global operations and the Barceló Díaz and García families created a new company, called Añejos Barceló, now Ron Barceló S.R.L.. In 2006, this company acquired the Barceló rum rights in its country. From that moment, the brand set its new precedent in sales volume, portfolio expansion, positioning, innovation and internationalisation. The Dominicans’ rum Ron Barceló is the most exported Dominican brand, reaching more than 80 countries around the world. Each of its bottles is a symbol of its own country’s culture. In the Dominican Republic, Barceló is known for its exacting quality standards and is recognised for its positive impact on the country’s environment and socio-economic conditions. An international presence

Today, the company is one of the largest contributors to the Dominican Republic in terms of investments, eco-friendly commitments, fiscal contributions, and high-quality standards towards local and international consumers. As a sipper its unremarkable – sweet young alcohol and a little zesty spiciness. It’s a young column distilled rum and does little to convince you otherwise. It doesn’t really have anything wrong with it but its averageness is its most striking feature. It has a little sweetness, slight notes of oak on the palate. The finish is quite hot and spicy but very short. The distillery is still overseen by fourth and fifth-generation members of the family who strive to maintain and honor the memory of their beloved founder.

Tasting Notes

At Bar Convent Berlin (BCB) 2023, we spoke with Otto Flores, Ron Barceló global brand ambassador, to learn more about this special bottling. It is made from exclusive reserves of Barceló Imperial Rum, which have been aged for more than a decade under the meticulous attention of master rum maker Eduardo Galíndez. That same year the bottles for Ron Barceló Imperial, Gran Añejo and Añejo were redesigned and a new era began. Barceló Imperial Maple Cask is a rum that boasts a dark amber-brown colour and reddish tones, akin to maple leaves in autumn, and ochre colour of the stills in which the rum is made. The liquid delivers aromas of melted caramel, plum, vanilla, and maple honey.
