About this deal

Wood Finishes Direct, one of the most common issues we get is when customers hire a painter and decorator to apply a A roller is the recommended method for applying some water-based polyurethanes, as well as some oil-based polyurethanes and moisture-cured poly finishes. Rollers are good for finishing multi-direction floors, like parquets. You can also use a roller to apply conversion varnish, as long as you make sure that you’re applying enough product.

A varnish is the most hard-wearing finish to use for wood flooring. There are 2-part varnishes available which can be mixed with a hardener prior to application, allowing the two to dry together, thereby creating a much tougher and more durable surface finish. Hire a special floor edging sander and you’ll easily be able to sand right up to the edges of the floor without having to get down on your hands and knees and DIY the fiddly bits. The better you clean the room before starting, the better the eventual finish will be. Dust and dirt can stop sandpaper being as effective as it should be and also makes an awful mess of your varnish if you don’t do everything you can to keep things spotless. Some people even hoover the walls and ceiling to make 100% sure there’s minimaldust.

What floor finish is right for you does depend on what look you want to achieve, how durable you require the finish to be and also how much time you want to devote maintenance. I’ve finished both these boards and both of them look fantastic. The Varnish feels strong and it looks great, the Oil feels and looks a lot more natural you can actually feel the grain as you touch it. Woodleys Finishing Pad, it’s kind of like a scotch pad. You can also do this with very fine sandpaper just don’t put too much pressure on you’ll undo a lot of your hard work, this step aids adhesion of further coats and helps it level out, you just do it by lightly rubbing it down like so, and wipe off any dust after this step. Always work in a clean, dust-free, well ventilated area. If you’re varnishing a floor, open the windows and doors but try to keep draughts to a minimum in case they blow dust on your finish.

Varnish can be applied in any of three ways: by brush, with a roller and pad, or by spraying. Brushing is a time-tested technique and many high-quality brushes are available.

How to varnish your floor

The latest applicator technology makes life much easier. A T-bar applicator, for example, is great for applying any finish, even fiddly bits like door frames, and tends to be faster than a lambswool applicator. Floor varnish is a popular solution for protecting and enhancing the look of wooden floors. There are different types of floor varnish that you can choose from, such as oil-based, water-based, and polyurethane. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to understand the differences between them before making a decision. One of the main benefits of using floor varnish is that it can help seal the wood, preventing it from absorbing moisture and dirt. Trim pads are good for use with water-based products, because they don’t hold on to finish. When applying water-based polyurethane finish to a hardwood floor, you always want to use use a synthetic applicator (except for synthetic lambswool.) Trim pads are also great for cutting into corners and small spaces. Rollers Ideal for applying a wide range of water, solvent and oil-based wood finishing products to larger areas including walls and floors.

Predominantly used by professional floor finishers, application blades are used to apply oil stains and other oil-based products to large areas. Flexible filler knifes are a must for applying a wide range of wood fillers. Hand buffing and drill buffing brushes let you create a stunning deep shine and lustre with ease. Our low cost yet highly effective disposable foam brushes let you make a lovely, clean straight edge without leaving bristles behind. And floor brushes are perfect for applying any kind of oil, stain or varnish to large areas.Between coats, you can keep brushes and other applicators in airtight bag or container to prevent them drying out. And after application brushes and equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with warm water and wiped dry. Using a brush––usually a China bristle brush attached to a long pole––is the recommended application method for conversion varnish (also known as Swedish or acid cure finishes). Brushes are also commonly used to apply oil-based and moisture-cured polyurethane finishes.
