It was authored by George Lawrence Stone, who compiled his wealth of experience into a book for serious-minded players to hone their skills. Furthermore, the book is often referred to as the bible of drumming as it contains all essential subjects that drummers need. The book teaches how to improve your speed, control, rhythm, flexibility, power, delicacy, muscular coordination, the accuracy of execution, and endurance. Although it doesn’t include full kit exercises/patterns, with enough imagination, you can add a ride pattern to the original exercises and voila, you just made your own groove. No matter how long you’ve been playing for, every drummer should have at least some of the best drum books in the world in their collection. Why? In Effortless Mastery, Werner references many more relevant books for artists in any discipline at any stage of their development. That’s my favorite thing about non-fiction: almost every book I enjoy leads to numerous others! Two of my favorites (although there are many more) are Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel and Free Play by Stephen Nachmanovich. Brandon Toews’ instructive book The Drummer’s Toolbox offers a thorough introduction to 101 drumming styles from the past century. Drummers of all levels are encouraged to use the book to broaden their musical horizons and develop a broader range of playing styles. In addition, it serves as a comprehensive reference manual for learning and performing drums in any musical genre.
Cardio drumming classes, such as Drums Alive and Pound, have been around for a few years. But, the benefits you receive when you take this type of class are so much greater than those of your average aerobics class. For one thing, everyone is smiling and having a ball! It doesn’t surprise me that this trend has come around now and is especially popular with women because drums put us in synch with Mother Earth. In fact, in ancient cultures sacred drumming was performed by women. Colin wrote it with the single bass drum pedal in mind, but you can easily adapt all the exercises for double bass drum pedal if that’s your thing. There is also a lot to learn in it. A complaint I’ve heard is that the book goes too in depth.
