FINISH: The finish lingers for a medium duration, leaving notes of malt, oak, and a gentle kiss of lemon pepper. Colour… I can pretend I’m a whisky snob, I can bang on about knowing the ins and outs of the industry, but here I am, skimming along until something catches my eye. (Sherry bomb enthusiasts, take note here, I was looking for a non-sherry cask whisky. I have plenty of those.) It is shallow. Maybe it’s a bit like going on gut instinct, rather than being seduced by any of the marketing copy on the bottle (I jest, of course, most whisky copywriting is hilarious, I rarely trust it). Indeed, perhaps I’m just so jaded that I cannot trust anything now: in the absence of good information on how the distillate was made, or really what the casks were, can you blame me for looking at the colour?

I attended a very interesting Whisky Squad last night where the theme for the evening was competition scoring. Divided into ‘pods’ of four, we were asked to score some recent medal winning drams and then compare and contrast with colleagues within our pod to award an overall medal (or not) to six different whiskies. Scoring in a collaborative and collegial manner is quite intriguing and provides yet further proof that spirits appreciation really all is a matter of opinion. the finish takes that bitterness and runs with it, leaving you with an unpleasant, and often metallic, flavor in your mouth. Aultmore Distillery is nestled in the heart of the Scottish Speyside region, specifically in Banffshire. Distilled by Aultmore, this release is aged for 18 years, bottled at 46% ABV, and newly imported to the US under the recently relaxed bottle volume guidelines: this release is a 700ml bottle. Long finish, a touch of ash and brine, bold and full of flavor. Pepper, caramel, fresh biscuits and sweet buttercream. Very long finish, delightful. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Today, I’m diving into the Aultmore 18 yo whisky, and what immediately captures my attention is the enchanting name of their single malt collection: Foggy Moss. Just mentioning it conjures a vivid image – a hauntingly beautiful scene of fog weaving through the corridors of a moss-draped, long-forgotten castle nestled on the misty moors. Rich on the palate, a bit of smoke, salinity, crushed stone and lemon curd. It's just peppery and smoky enough to give complexity - this is by no means a peated, or heavily smoky dram. Charred pineapple, vanilla bean, toffee, fresh rising bread, salted caramel. Really decadent, interesting, rich for 46% ABV.
