About this deal

In late February 2014, media reports stated that the BBC had acquired exclusive TV rights to Christie's works in the UK (previously associated with ITV) and made plans with Acorn's co-operation to air new productions for the 125th anniversary of Christie's birth in 2015. [99] As part of that deal, the BBC broadcast Partners in Crime [100] and And Then There Were None, [101] both in 2015. [102] Subsequent productions have included The Witness for the Prosecution [103] but plans to televise Ordeal by Innocence at Christmas 2017 were delayed because of controversy surrounding one of the cast members. [104] The three-part adaptation aired in April 2018. [105] A three-part adaptation of The A.B.C. Murders starring John Malkovich and Rupert Grint began filming in June 2018 and was first broadcast in December 2018. [106] [107] A two-part adaptation of The Pale Horse was broadcast on BBC1 in February 2020. [108] Death Comes as the End will be the next BBC adaptation. Archibald Christie was born in 1889 in Peshawar in The British Raj, now Pakistan. His father, also called Archibald Christie, was in the Indian Civil Service. It is said that he was a judge; however, his death notice in The Law Times journal described him as a barrister. [1] His mother was Ellen Ruth "Peg" Coates, who is often mentioned in her daughter-in-law (Agatha)'s autobiography. Peg was born in Portumna, Ireland in 1862. Her father was Dr Samuel Coates (died 1879). [2] Her brother was in the Indian Medical Service, and she was staying with him when she met Archibald Christie (senior), [3] who was thirteen years older than she was. In 1888, at the age of 26, she married him. [4] The couple had two sons, Archie and Campbell.

At 18, Christie wrote her first short story, "The House of Beauty", while recovering in bed from an illness. It consisted of about 6,000 words about "madness and dreams", subjects of fascination for her. Her biographer Janet Morgan has commented that, despite "infelicities of style", the story was "compelling". [4] :48–49 (The story became an early version of her story "The House of Dreams".) [24] Other stories followed, most of them illustrating her interest in spiritualism and the paranormal. These included " The Call of Wings" and "The Little Lonely God". Magazines rejected all her early submissions, made under pseudonyms (including Mac Miller, Nathaniel Miller, and Sydney West); some submissions were later revised and published under her real name, often with new titles. Opinions on this episode, both at the time and retrospectively, fall into two camps: either Christie experienced a genuine loss of memory, or she was faking it. One (male) journalist even suggested that she had deliberately set out to frame her husband for murder. Worsley is firmly of the belief that Christie suffered an episode of mental illness (what would now be called a dissociative fugue state), and here her sympathy for her subject is at its fiercest: “The great injustice of Agatha Christie’s life was not that her husband betrayed her while she was mourning her mother. Nor was it even the mental distress. It was the fact that she was shamed for her illness in the national newspapers in such a public way that people ever since have suspected her of duplicity and lies.” The later Marple novels ‘all express Agatha’s view of a Britain that has gone wrong’ Dame Agatha's private pleasures were gardening–she won local prizes for horticulture–and buying furniture for her various houses. She was a shy person: she disliked public appearances, but she was friendly and sharp-witted to meet. By inclination as well as breeding, she belonged to the English upper middle class. She wrote about, and for, people like herself. That was an essential part of her charm.
