I’m going to preface this review of Aeon’s End Legacy by saying I’ve split it into two sections: a spoiler-free overall run-down, and then a summing-up which will probably have spoilers around the campaign. I don't want to spoil all the powers and cards for you, but trust me, they're great. Every time you kill one of the Nameless and move on, you'll be given more supply cards to swap in. This is one of the most generous legacy games ever, there's no drip-feeding here. It almost feels wasteful at times, we haven't used all of the cards we were offered. And that seems to be the theme of this outing – value. While in previous games in the series, and indeed the core box, any powers that offered healing made things a little too easy, here there’s none of that. Instead, you’ve really got to be working on the market to upgrade your cards, and those of your allies. This was more or less made from scratch, although I did get the Nemesis and Gravehold Life Counter scripting from another mod.

I really enjoyed Aeon’s End Legacy. I love how the game reveals new mechanics with each chapter, rather than swamp the player with everything at once. In a game where you can replay each fight ad infinitum it’s fine, but in a legacy game where losses can affect the game negatively, it’s a really good way to break new players in gently. The story also progresses with these changes, so thematically it’s very strong too. All base games are here, Aeon's End, War Eternal, Legacy, The New Age, Outcasts, Legacy of Gravehold and Past & Future.

This can be played with 1 – 4 players. I did it just myself, but I played with two mages whose names where “Walter” and “Donnie”. I just wanted to yell “you’re out of your element Donnie” often which I did. This is all a Big Lebowski reference for those unfamiliar. There are four different mages cards but this is just cosmetic, they all start the same and can all be customized in the 500 different ways or whatever ridiculous number was figured out by the designer for how much customization there is. By playing with 2, that means in a round of six turns, it was 2 each player and 2 nemesis. The legacy elements of Outcasts make the core mechanics of the game gel in a way that the core box doesn’t quite manage. An excellent entry in the series – and not a bad entry point if you don’t mind skipping ahead in the story.
