About this deal

The relationship between Sorinda and Kearan was so sweet! Delicate, subtle and discreet, it consists of small gestures, fleeting glances and a few soft words here and there. It is a full-blown slooow burn that made me sweat so much! Sorinda initially dislikes Kearan, his attention, the way he seems to understand her and especially see her wherever she hides. She tries to ignore him, or treat him badly, with funny situations and tasty banter. Kearan is always there, one step behind, ready to accept all her comments and various attitudes with great patience. I enjoyed the building of their relationship, the way they slowly begin to understand and support each other, talking about various problems and dealing with different situations. Their relationship is different from that of Alosa and Riden, less sizzling in some respects, but still very enjoyable. Okay, Alosa and Riden remain my favorites, but Sorinda and Kearan are super cute!

Sorinda was an unexpected new favourite. While I enjoyed the first two books in the Daughter of the Pirate King series, I never really connected with the main character Alosa. She’s badass and cool for sure, and I did appreciate her character. But the difference with Sorinda is tangible. Her feelings of being misplaced, her fear of being a failure and constantly feeling like she had taken water over her head just hit differently. She just resonated with me on a deeper level. Who knew that an assassin pirate could make me cry. This next chapter of pirating adventure turns it’s focus on Sorinda, deadly assassin and Pirate Queen Alosa’s newest captain, as she sails away on a mission to search for and rescue members of Alosa’s crew. This mission takes Sorinda far away from her comfort zone, mentally and physically. Charged with protecting her crew and transporting them far from balmy, tropical shores to frozen seas, icebergs, sea monsters, and ice islands.

The audiobook was very well done, and the narrator voiced each character believably. It was clear form the voices and accents who was who. The pacing of the narration was just right as was the emphasis and infections of the narrator.I loved Sorinda, the protagonist with her single first person pov! Eighteen-year-old Sorinda is an assassin working for the pirate queen Alosa, extremely skilled and efficient in her assignments. Serious, meticulous and gruff, she is a solitary, taciturn and reserved girl who thrives in the shadows and hates being the center of attention. Sorinda struggles to interact with people, to form relationships, accustomed to keeping everything and everyone at a distance. Except for a few trusted people, for whom she would be willing to do anything. Scarred by a difficult and painful past, behind the grumpy attitude and under the biting irony hides a sensitive soul, full of torment and insecurities. She is a complex and multifaceted character with a wonderful characterization and a beautiful path of growth! She had already intrigued me in "Daughter of the Pirate King", but here, with her pov, she won me over!

While this book does come after DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING and DAUGHTER OF THE SIREN QUEEN, and contains spoilers for it, it is a standalone story rather than the third book in a trilogy. Some characters return from the original duology, though (nicely) the focus of those books are hardly in this book, giving Sorinda, Kearan, and the new characters more space. I might not be done killing. The thought sends a delightful shot of warmth to my sword arm, my fingers itching to reach for a weapon. As I crawl behind the nearest table, my heart races again. It’s a wild percussion that I’ve grown used to, even crave at times. The thrill of the hunt.

This book is killer! Literally. Fans of DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING will love this new journey with Sorinda as the main character. She’s an assassin, Captain, and all around awesome pirate.

Joined by a distractingly handsome mercenary and a young scholar with extensive knowledge of the world’s known magics, Ziva and her sister set out on a quest to keep the sword safe until they can find a worthy wielder or a way to destroy it entirely. Unlike the more tropical settings of the original duology, this book takes place in cold waters full of icebergs and a very horrible monster (that fight and the preceding scenes were one of my favourite sequences.) It was so chilly, perfect for the coming winter! No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it. I could do it now, I suppose. Just roll over, grab my dagger from its sheath at my side, and slice his throat.I extend my arm until it is only inches from Vordan’s left ankle. My fingers tiptoe ever closer, until my pointer finger is directly behind his heel. It would be so easy to slice his Achilles tendon. He’d never walk again. Instead, I draw circles against the wood slats on the floor, allowing Vordan to think the last thoughts he will ever have. Eventually, he sighs, pulls his legs onto the bed, and fidgets with the covers. Six down!” someone from below shouts. “Spread out and search the mansion, and you there, go rouse the captain.” The original Daughter of the Pirate King duology focused on half-siren pirate queen, Alosa. As her personal assassin, Sorinda is her right hand, so when a ship of Alosa's goes missing Sorinda is tasked with captaining a rescue crew. 20-year-old Kearan Erroth, to her dismay, is going to be the helmsman. Hello?” the remaining man calls out, likely having seen his crewman pulled out from his line of sight before the doors closed.
