The annexation of Alsace and Lorraine by Germany in 1871 led to numerous volunteers from the two regions enlisting in the Foreign Legion, which gave them the option of French citizenship at the end of their service. [36] In combat, you act without passion and without hate, you respect defeated enemies, and you never abandon your dead, your wounded, or your arms. VBL of 1er REC, with an AA NF1 mounted on, during an exercise in Corsica ( 2012) VBL of 1er REC during the Bastille Day parade Les chevrons d’ancienneté. Each gold chevron represents five years of service in the Legion. Ordinary legionnaires and non-commissioned officers (non-senior ones, sergeants and staff sergeants) wear them on parade uniforms. Today, the Foreign Legion is the only unit of the French Army which has obtained the right to use an unlimited number of chevrons of seniority (the rest of the French Army could bear a maximum of 4 chevrons as of 2015). The Legion force, made up of 27 different nationalities, was attached to the French 6th Light Armoured Division whose mission was to protect the Coalition's left flank. [52]

AMX 10 RC (Rues-Canon – wheels-cannon) is a wheeled, heavily armed amphibious reconnaissance vehicle and tank destroyer used by the Foreign Legion and other French Army forces. It has been produced by GIAT Industries at its Ateliers de construction d’Issy-les-Moulineaux (AMX) factory since 1976. Within the Foreign Legion, the AMX 10 RC has been using by the 1er REC since the 1980s. In the 2010s, the 1er REC was equipped with modernized types AMX 10 RCR ( revalorisé, upgraded), furnished with various new systems and additional armor, to be able to serve until 2025. Honneur et Fidélité. Honor and Fidelity. The second long-used motto of the French Foreign Legion. Unlike the rest of the French Army, which uses the motto Honneur et Patrie (Honor and Fatherland) on their regimental flags, the Foreign Legion uses the motto Honneur et Fidélité. This is said to originate from the motto of the Régiment de Diesbach (1721-1806), the Swiss unit within the French Imperial Army. Axe ( French: Hache): serves to destroy obstacles of wood dressed by the enemy. At origin there were 6 kinds of axes to destroy and 7 kinds of axes to hammer. [3]
