About this deal

Despite actually being born on the Isle of Man (closer to Liverpool), enjoying their initial musical success in Australia, then, later, their greatest commercial success in Los Angeles, the distinct voices of the Gibb brothers were honed and given the stamp of Mancs during the boys’ formative years living in the Chorlton-Cum-Hardy area of Manchester. Hence, though many might prefer I do otherwise, I hereby claim the Bee Gees as a Manchester band. I am someone, as you might have realised, who likes looking at water (canals or river, not the water I am supposed to drink or bathe in). Hence one of my favourite places to walk is along the canal in Castlefield, near Albert’s Shed and Dukes 92. If possible, I tend to take my friends there when they visit Manchester. It feels so peaceful even if there are people around.

The idea of avoiding consuming meat came about thanks to sermons by Reverend William Cowherd held at the Beefsteak Chapel. The reverend was so into the vegetarian movement that he actually wrote vegetarian hymns to sing to his congregation. You really can’t make this stuff up. The reigning queen of all gentle observational humour. And Mrs Merton. Mrs Merton! Currently battling with cancer, we wish her and her firneds & family the best of wishes. Parliamentary reform There's epic human drone views from 20 Stories, over the gothic John Ryland's library, the two cathedrals in Manchester and Salford clearly visible, along with the eponymous Beetham Tower. I remember you wouldn't take anything off me for the tape, so I bought you a little rag doll that you hung up behind you in the dj booth, the memories are endless, another You’d had the Berlin Wall coming down, you had Mandela coming out of prison,” says the Beloved’s Marsh. “Those things fuelled the optimism I wanted to put into the music. It honestly felt like the whole world was changing for the better.” Football was part of it, as singer Denise Johnson, then with Primal Scream, remembers. “Fourth place in the World Cup wasn’t too dusty! It felt like a big party was ahead of us, celebrating being English in a positive way through football, music, the arts and fashion.”Russell T Davies’ 1999 drama about life on Manchester’s gay scene broke ground for LGBT depictions on UK television. It was also brilliant. And very explicit. The Doctor Who Revival Out of acid house … Paul Oakenfold DJing in London. Photograph: PYMCA/Universal Images Group/Getty Images Kevin Godley spoke of 10cc’s “all for one and one for all” attitude and “very northern work ethic” as the principles that enabled the band to develop as both top-tier producers and ultimately as internationally acclaimed songwriters and artists. The city centre itself is wonderful stretching from Ancoats to Castlefield along a grubby street and canal network with architecture that marries modernity and history. It has the Northern Quarter awash with independent shops with Fred Aldous and Unitom at its epicentre in the surprisingly photogenic Stevenson Square. Despite not being especially near to the sea (by which I mean not near at all), the first ever military submarine was eventide right in Manchester. It was invented by George Garrett, a vicar (really) in 1878. Divine inspiration perhaps?

While the 10cc boys used Strawberry Studios to record such local notables as Herman’s Hermits and Wayne Fontana, they also used the space to work on their own burgeoning material. Kevin Godley has spoken of their “all for one and one for all” attitude and “very northern work ethic” as the principles that enabled the band to develop as both top-tier producers and ultimately as internationally acclaimed songwriters and artists.

Manchester’s world firsts

Garrett had to take his invention to Wirral to find a bit of sea to test on it, which today would take you a bit longer than an hour to drive to from Manchester (sans submarine). The watercraft was dubbed “Resurgam”, which means “I shall rise again” in Latin. Ironically, follow-up vessel Resurgam II ended up sinking in Liverpool Bay. Vimto This development would prove to be pivotal in the history of Manchester music, as the city then had a place where its local bands could stay and record; the national trend to that point had been for provincial artists to leave their native towns and relocate to London by necessity, thus stripping outlying regions of their local talent and indigenous scenes. Problem is I'm struggling to catch a good photo of it and could do with a digital copy of the cherub if possible. It would solely be used for this and can be sent direct to my tattooist if wanted.

Something that drew in so many elements, and revelled in such hedonism, would inevitably fall apart. And it was a turbulent time. The poll tax riots, which the Farm’s Hooton calls “a blow to the twitching corpse of Thatcherism”, had happened in March, and the Gulf war loomed. By 1991, the recession had hit hard. Scenes splintered and rave became hardcore. People’s History Museum: “ the national museum of democracy, telling the story of its development in Britain: past, present, and future.“ Despite having already acted as a regular character on the famous Manchester soap opera Coronation Street, Peter Noone was only 15-years-old when he took the vocal reins for the Hermits. No stranger to the spotlight, Noone’s irrepressible comedic stage presence and exaggerated Mancunian accent elicited Music Hall era nostalgia for English audiences, while being just plain cute to American youths who could not get enough of the new Brit-beat exports. Barry Gibb’s patented falsetto trills can be heard in Fischerspooner, Har Mar Superstar, Ladytron, while pop acts like the Scissor Sisters and provocateurs like Peaches have used the Bee Gees as a reference point in their wry deconstructions of gender and sexual identities. The Metrolink, apparently the slowest city centre urban tram network in the world, delights and disappoints in equal measure. Delights in its convenience and disappoints with its pace. Speaking of non-Indian food, there are quite a few contenders as well that offer different kinds of food experiences. If you are looking for an upscale place: I greatly enjoyed my dining experience in Albert’s Shed and also the fact that it has beautiful ambience and is by the canal! I have had Christmas dinners at Browns Manchester and Marco’s New York Italian MediaCity UK. The food at both these places was decent. I did quite enjoy the turkey, to be honest. I had another fancy dinner in Grand Pacific. Honestly, I was looking at places to dine at and was biased about this place because it has a stunning ambience! The food was alright.
