About this deal

Mulch adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down that can be taken up by the roots of your plants. Box trees growing in containers require feeding a little more frequently and are fed differently from those growing in the ground.

The RHS recommends that you don't use pesticides. Most pesticides (including organic types) reduce biodiversity, including natural enemies, impact soil health and have wider adverse environmental effects.

Pheromone traps, can indicate whether there are moths in the areaand their level of activity. These areavailable from several suppliers including Agralan, Dragonfli and Solabiol Buxus 2 in 1 Feed & Protect comes with two 500ml bottles. One bottle contains a Buxus feed that’s concentrated and gets to work feeding and greening plants. The second bottle protects a plant’s structure and helps to deter harmful box blight. Cell grown, pot grown and instant box hedging plants are available to buy all year round. Bare roots are only available from november to late April/early May. Box is an unusual species in that it's absolutely fine to buy root balls all year round. Of course, as with growing box trees in the ground, the growing medium should be your first concern. Therefore, the first step when feeding a box tree is to think about where you are growing it and whether the soil or growing medium in that location is optimal for the health of the variety you are growing.

The soil should also let the plants absorb nutrients easily and be free-draining so that the plant’s roots aren’t sitting in moist soil for too long. Initial symptoms are the delayed emergence of new growth. Patches of wilted and discoloured leaves increase in size before falling from the plant. Spores masses that often appear underneath the leaves in wet or humid conditions are pink rather than white for box blight. Treatment Do two important jobs at the same time with this super helpful new plant product. Buxus 2 in 1 Feed & Protect is specially designed to strengthen plants and shrubs from within, working hard to nourish and hydrate as well as protect foliage and encourage superior flowering. Box shrubs thrive when in neutral to very mildly acidic soil, though they can be tolerant of a range of pH levels and can be grown successfully in many different soils.Be aware that products such as Xentariare not registered for use in the UK and we cannot advise on their use. These shrubs cannot tolerate remaining in a waterlogged situation and this is one of the most important factors in determining where they will grow well. Plants in pots will need regular low-level nutrients to replace those washed out due to watering: a liquid seaweed feed works well.” Seaweed Bio-Stimulant - Seaweed Bio-Stimulant is ideal for application as an aftercare product for your plants. This plant feed works particularly well in conjunction with Rootgrow as the liquid seaweed can speed up the mycorrhizal colonisation by up to 60%. Now apply a product called Top Buxus which is high in nitrogen for strong green growth and sulphur which is a natural fungicidal agent which will help defend against any blight.

This is especially important when the soil is a heavier one with poor drainage, but adding organic matter is always a good idea to improve the health of box plants and to make sure that they get the nutrients they need. Providing The Right Mulch For Buxus The pesticides listed are legally available in the UK. This information is provided to avoid misuse of legal products and the use of unauthorised and untested products, which potentially has more serious consequences for the environment and wildlife than when products are used legally. Although incredibly popular, Box doesn't come without its (un)fair share of problems. We'd encourage you though not to panic; many of these Buxus sempervirens diseases are rarely disastrous. For more information, please speak to one of our experts today. Should I Be Worried About Box Hedge Blight? Keep in mind that feeding box trees too much, especially with high-nitrogen feeds, can be detrimental. If plants are in the ground and nutrients are required, apply a balanced fertiliser in the autumn to allow take up through the roots during the winter which will give natural growth in the spring.

How to Care for Box Topiary

As you can see from the above, feeding box trees is a simple process that differs when growing in the ground compared with container cultivation. Bonemeal Root Builder - Bonemeal Root Builder is ideal for application during planting and aftercare. This is an organic product with slow release fertiliser that can be used as an alternative to Rootgrow for budget planting, or as a top-dressing during spring. Buxus sempervirens has dense, small, round, dark evergreen leaves with an average growth rate of approx 10-15cm per annum. When you buy box hedging, it should be trimmed in late spring with hand garden shears, keeping the blade of the shears parallel to the hedge surface. For an even more low growing hedge, try Dwarf Box Hedging Plants (Buxus sempervirens Suffriticosa), or view our incredible selection of low growing hedging plants for more options and inspiration. Box Topiary With this fantastic two in one solution, you won't need to worry! Westland's Buxus 2 in 1 Feed & Protect contains sulphur and calcium that strengthens the plant from within. It also helps to retain water for an overall healthier plant. The formula will give your new and transported plants the best start possible as it will greatly improve your soil. Macrophoma leaf spot is caused by the fungus Macrophoma candollei, a weakly pathogenic fungus. Similar to Volutella blight it can be managed by improving cultural conditions. Symptoms Before planting box in your garden, it is important to make sure you have amended the soil with plenty of organic matter to improve drainage and soil structure. Box is a very dense small-leaved native evergreen with dark green glossy foliage. It's slow growing and shade tolerant. Traditionally it has been used for formal hedging and topiary work.

PACKING & DELIVERY

Once this is done remove all the cuttings and then carefully remove as much debris as possible from under and around the plants. This not only removes as much infected material as possible but also allows more air to the centre of the plants. Early diagnosis and plant care are key to controlling Volutella blight. Unlike box blight full plant recovery can be expected if cultural conditions are improved. This includes the removal of diseased branches when foliage is dry and old leaves from the interior of infected plants. Destroy the debris and wipe clean cutting tools with a suitable disinfectant to prevent the spread of further disease. An application of Top Buxus, high in nitrogen for strong growth and sulphur a natural fungicidal agent to defend against blight will benefit the plant. Control & Prevention It is therefore important to ensure that our box trees get the nutrients they need to stay healthy; feeding Buxus well can help with this. It also creates something of a barrier between the lowest leaves on your box and the soil, which may help to reduce the spread of problems like blight.
