About this deal

This show has Rhod returning to standup after a long hiatus from standup and features the tales from a period of his life during which he went through the death of a parent, infertility, being diagnosed with dyslexia, HDD and having a stroke. This all sounds like it would be a dark and depressing time but thanks to Rhods amazing way of finding the funny side of things it is far from becoming sad or depressing. Further afield, Rhod embarked on a treacherous adventure through Nepal, teaming up with Greg Davies in World’s Most Dangerous Roads for BBC Two. He later starred in, and produced Rhod Gilbert vs Kilimanjaro, which followed him leading a trek to Africa’s highest peak in aid of Velindre Cancer Centre. There was no camera crew, andnever any intention to broadcast the journey, but, as a specialone-off feature, BBC One Wales transmitted the footage captured by Rhod and his companions on their extraordinary adventure. Rhod continues to be a proud patron of Velindre and has since lead fundraising treks in Peru, Patagonia and Cuba. After graduating, Gilbert travelled for a year and a half around Australia and Asia before returning to Carmarthen and working as an admin assistant for the Welsh Office. [5] He later worked as a qualitative researcher for several market research agencies in London. [4] Career [ edit ] Stand-up comedy [ edit ] Rhod has written and presented two very personal documentaries. Rhod Gilbert: Stand Up To Shyness explored the huge impact that shyness has had had upon his life and was met with tremendous critical acclaim; earning nominations in the 2018 Bafta Cymru Awards for ‘Best Single Documentary’ and ‘Best Presenter’. His second documentary was another subject close to his heart; Rhod Gilbert: Stand Up To Infertility, explored his own experiences with fertility issues, and the subject of male fertility in general. The programme was nominated for ‘Best Single Documentary’ in the 2021 Bafta Cymru Awards. Rhod is now proudly working with the Fertility Network UK on an ongoing campaign to continue to raise awareness around the issue. Gilbert married his long-term girlfriend, writer and comedian Sian Harries, in August 2013. They divide their time between London and Wales. [31] They have no children. In 2021 Gilbert took part in a documentary series about the stigma of male infertility. [32]

In 2006, Gilbert hosted the BBC Radio Wales comedy panel show Jest a Minute, live from The Comedy Store in London. The second series of Jest a Minute was recorded in late 2008 in Cardiff's Glee Club, hosted by Gilbert and featuring regular team captains Chris Corcoran and Lloyd Langford, and guests from the comedy circuit such as Elis James, Greg Davies, Lucy Porter and Jon Richardson. A third series was also broadcast. John is, I venture, a bulletproof device for bringing levity to heavyweight material. “Device? What!” responds Gilbert, and I worry that, with my barely concealed scepticism as to whether John actually exists, I’ve triggered another rant. But no: there’s a twinkle in Gilbert’s eye. “Until this show,” he says, “all my standup was made up. I think pretty much everything was entirely fictitious. And in this show, it’s not. It’s all true stuff that happened: the stroke, my mum’s Alzheimer’s, the fertility treatment. And John does exist. I did hire a driver for that year. But yes, there’s some comedic licence taken with our arguments.” He pauses. “To say any more than that would spoil it, wouldn’t it?” Badshah, Nadeem (14 July 2022). Gilbert was Paramount Comedy's continuity writer and announcer between September 2004 and October 2005, providing end-credit voice-overs for their peak time programme schedule. The title of the show comes from having to hire a driver due to having the stroke and finding his driver John a great source of material due to his bizarre views and bewildering inability to understand fairly basic things. a b c d Hay, Malcolm (16 October 2006). So while I never imagined that I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands. The NHS care I’m receiving is incredible. I wouldn't wish this on anyone...but who knows, maybe I'll come out the other end with a new stand-up show and a 40 minute rant about orange squash." He added: "Thank you everyone for your support over the last few weeks and months (and years). I’ll be disappearing for a while and won’t be commenting further, at least not for now, whilst I focus on my recovery." In September 2018, Gilbert appeared as a contestant of the 7th series of Taskmaster alongside James Acaster, Jessica Knappett, Kerry Godliman and Phil Wang. He added that his symptoms became worse when he was in Cuba, while he was fundraising for Velindre. He said: "In May, I noticed lumps started popping up in places they shouldn't be. It turns out I've got Stage 4 cancer. I also caught Covid on that walk as well. I came home with cancer and Covid from a Velindre fundraising trek... the irony of that! I went as a Velindre patron and came home as a patient."
