Wizard and the Princess was ported to the IBM PC in 1982, Sierra's first game for the PC platform. For unknown reasons, this version was re-titled Adventure in Serenia. Roberta Williams reputedly referred to the colors on the IBM PC as "atrocious" upon seeing the completed game running for the first time. Adventure in Serenia was a launch title for the IBM PCjr, announced in late 1983. [5]The story was based on the many fairy tales Roberta used to read as a child. [3] The game improved upon Mystery House by adding color graphics. It was the first adventure game to have full-color graphics selling over 60,000 copies. [4] The Apple II could only display six different colors simultaneously, but clever use of dithering made it possible to give the illusion of more colors on the screen. The introduction for Adventure of Serenia explains that the adventurer, with the help of a computer, has magically transported to Serenia to save the princess. Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers.

Stanton, Jeffrey; Wells, Robert P.; Rochowansky, Sandra; Mellid, Michael, eds. (1984). The Addison-Wesley Book of Atari Software. Addison-Wesley. p.33. ISBN 0-201-16454-X. One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading. Donaldson clearly means to twist the older fairytales: Like in Sleeping Beauty, the story begins with a birthday party for the princess, where an evil character casts an evil spell, and then the good fairy comes in and changes the spell just ever so slightly to give the fair maiden a fighting chance. Like in Rapunzel, the girl is captured and imprisoned in a high tower. Like in Cinderella, she is made to do all the cleaning. Mark Marlow reviewed Mission: Asteroid, Mystery House, and The Wizard and the Princess for Computer Gaming World, and stated that " The Wizard and the Princess has the best graphics and has a beautiful fairy tale setting as its theme. Of the three it was the most challenging and should be attempted only after you are familiar with the gaming system". [6] According to Sierra's Interaction magazine, this game can be considered a prelude to the King's Quest series. King's Quest V marked a return to the Kingdom of Serenia. [11] The events are mentioned and expanded upon in The King's Quest Companion, 2nd Edition. It mentioned that the wanderer, a barbarian, had turned down the offer of marriage after saving the princess. He journeyed into the desert and died. All that remained of him is his skeleton and a single leather shoe (a reference to KQ5). Princess Priscilla later married an individual named Kenneth the Huge and became the queen of Serenia, after her father's (King George IV) death. [12] It was further referenced as part of the King's Quest series through a trivia question in the King's Questions game that came with certain versions of the King's Quest Collection.Make a list of words to describe the different settings in the story (e.g. the party, the cellar in the castle).

Matthew Murray said it all in his review of this terrible PC version of Sierra's (then On-Line Systems) Wizard And The Princess. I'm quoting it verbatim here as a proof that I'm not alone in the minority opinion that Roberta Williams was, and is, NOT the best adventure game designer ;) I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books. Development [ edit ] Advertisement from the June 1981 issue of The On-Line Letter for some of On-Line Systems' Hi-Res Adventure games, including Wizard and the Princess What if Rapunzel, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty didn't wait around for a prince to rescue them, but instead used their own wits to find happiness? I have read Princess & The Wizard with several classrooms of young children and both boys and girls remark on how much they prefer this story to the traditional passive fairytale princesses. It really should be part of any class study of fairytales.

My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. Design and make a new sparkly dress for Princess Eliza. Can you design a new sparkly outfit for the wizard / fairy godmother too? Make a shopping list for a birthday party. How much would each item cost? How many of each will you need if there are 10, 20 or 100 guests?
