About this deal

During the Christmas holidays in the 1984–1985 school year, Rowan Khanna got a new Wizard's Chess set from their parents, and invited Jacob's sibling to play the game in the Great Hall when they were on break from Christmas decorating. [6] In the position shown on the board, play would have continued as follows (moves written in algebraic notation): Ronald Weasley owned a Wizard's Chess set which he inherited from his grandfather. Unlike many of his hand-me-down possessions, the second-hand chess set was advantageous as the pieces trusted him. When Harry Potter played with Seamus Finnigan's chess men, they did not trust his judgement and offered him advice. [1] Of course, this chess scene was not described in such detail in the book, either. Perhaps it’s because J.K. Rowling didn’t have an International Master chess player consulting with her while she was writing her first book of a series that would, unbeknownst to her at the time, become one of the best selling children’s novels in history. If she had known that, or had the help of a chess professional on her side, she likely would have included more detail on the chess scene. We think IM Silman’s position would be the perfect addition to the book, though it may make non chess player’s eyes glaze over.

The great news for chess-loving Potterheads is that you can own a chess set that’s virtually identical to the one played by Harry and Ron – albeit completely inanimate! The Isle of Lewis Chess Set Wizard’s Edition – THE Harry Potter Chess SetThe game of chess actually plays a significant role in the Harry Potter books and movies, right from the very beginning. Several characters are known to play wizard’s chess, including Gryffindor students Seamus Finnigan and Percy Weasley. Ron Weasley is also seen to be playing a game of wizard’s chess on several different occasions – he even beats Harry a few times!

The board – which is made up of cardboard – folds up in four sections and it not as good as the pieces. The fact that it folds up is not ideal for gameplay since one or the other section may end up not sitting perfectly flat which can hinder gameplay. The size of the board is also very small which can make the pieces cramped up. The chessboard is made of a flat cardboard and is not as high quality as the pieces. It’s just like your typical four square monopoly board and does a decent job. The first one, not so popular, was the one where wizard's chess has been introduced. It was Ron playing against Harry in the hall, while Hermione was calling the game ''barbarian'' since the pieces were not captured but destroyed. Anyways, we did not got much from that game, since it was really short scene but a good one. This set was never made to play professional chess play so it would not be fair to criticize it for not being suitable for a regulation game of chess. The set is not good enough for serious gameplay due to the pieces being too lightweight and the board feeling slightly cramped up. If they had made the board a little bigger and added a bit of weight to the chess pieces, the set would have been perfect. That being said, if you have bought this set due to it being a “Wizard’s” chess set, it does the job perfectly. Jacob's sibling: " Why is it that we don't compete in more wizard's chess competitions at this school?" Minerva McGonagall: " Because, the last time Hogwarts students entered a wizard chess competition, it didn't end well." Jacob's sibling: " What happened to them? Did they lose the tournament?" Minerva McGonagall: " Yes. They suffered a heartbreaking loss to a school with a longstanding rivalry." — Professor McGonagall discusses Hogwarts' rivalry with Beauxbatons [src] The paired down versions of the chess scenes were certainly still dramatic ad enjoyable for people who are less familiar with the rules of chess. Since this was primarily a children’s movie, we can forgive the producers for not wanting to spend valuable screen time on a complex, metaphorical chess game that would likely go over the heads of the majority of their audience members. In the end, it was an entertaining scene, and now that we’ve explained the full context of the position, maybe we can all enjoy the scene a bit more.

The chess pieces of this Harry Potter Wizard’s chess set are made of high-grade plastic. They are heavier than normal chess sets and also very sturdy. The description was 'There's something so comforting about old, well-worn, much-loved things. We wish we could play a game of wizard chess on Ron's particularly rustic set. Not that we'd win, mind'. [24]

At the end of year feast, Albus Dumbledore awarded Ron fifty house points for 'the best played game of chess that Hogwarts has seen these many years'. Percy Weasley proudly boasted about his brother's accomplishment. [4] The Isle of Lewis chess pieces might not be as recognisable as the world’s-standard Staunton, but their fascinating history – and mystery – make them the perfect choice for Wizard’s Chess. Want to give a magical touch to the game of chess? The Harry Potter Wizard chess set will suit you perfectly. Just like Harry and Ron played Wizard’s chess in the Sorcerer’s Stone, you will be able to play the classic board game using detailed miniature replicas of the original life-size figures from the movie. There are three different companies that make these Harry Potter Wizard Chess sets. Let’s take a look at how each of these sets: Harry Potter Wizard Chess Set by Mattel If you are like me, you probably grew up reading (and loving) the Harry Potter books. More importantly, if you are like me and also developed a love for playing chess along the way, investing in a well-made Harry Potter movie themed chess set just makes sense.
