I felt like there were too many subplots and it didn't get all wrapped and tied together neatly like in some other authors' books. I also didn't care of all of the bad language in it. I know that is lame to some and that sometimes that type of language is used to define a character, but it shouldn't be every character. How do you feel about the role women play in the story? Are they realistic? What do you think of Gloria Russell? Christina Sullivan? Kate Whitney? Do you see them as mostly victims? This was first book Baldacci wrote and the second of his that I read. He definitely started off on a high note! I did not care much for the other one I listened to (Memory Man – and I think the audio had something to do with that). I am planning to try more by him, but I am hoping that it isn’t a case of him starting with his best and it is all downhill from here! The author used a plot device I don’t like. Sometimes it’s ok, usually if the victim outsmarts the bad guy. But here, it was annoying. The bad guy says to a good guy, if you do this, I’ll kill your daughter. So this good guy turned wimpy, meek, and compliant. It would have been so much better if he did something cool to outwit the bad guy. He could have sent the letter opener anonymously to a news agency, but he doesn’t. Instead he is set on a personal vendetta. Why do think this is so? Kate is Luther's only daughter. Luther had been in jail during Kate's childhood which led to Kate being harsh on criminals, especially thieves and burglars. The police later used Kate to get to Luther which changed her outlook on her father and her own life. Good things can turn bad. Discuss the Secret Service agents, Burton and Collins. Throughout the novel, they go from heroes, by saving the president’s life, to assassins in the cover up. Do they ever really have the chance to say no?
