Find out how to make your own compost heap Common fertilisers and their N-P-K ratios Vitax Q4 (5.3- 7.5 -10) Keep the products to the bare minimum. You do not need a separate fertiliser for every vegetable, for instance. As plants start into growth, after the dormancy of winter, it’s time to think about feeding to get the best results from your garden in the coming season. Winter rainfall (we’ve certainly had our fair share of that in the UK) washes soluble nutrients from the soil which can leave them in short supply for plants at a critical time. Insufficient nutrients mean slower, weaker, growth which can result in disease and fewer flowers. You will undoubtedly be planting some new shrubs and perennials too; these need the right nutrients in the soil to get them going, so using the best fertiliser at the time of planting is important. Apply 200 g/m2 (6 oz/sq yd) before planting in soil. Spread 35 g/m2 (1 oz/sq yd) as a regular feed at 3-4 week intervals. If you have any questions or comments that you need fertilising, then drop them in the comment box below.
Aromatic plants with a Mediterranean provenance often have deep-root systems that seek out food and water from the depths, so silvers are often best left to their own devices. British wildflowers also prefer low-nutrient soils, so concentrate fertilisers in certain areas and feed in the growing season - including September. Shop bough fertilisers contain an N-P-K formula consisting of N for nitrogen, P for phosphorous and K for potash. A good fertiliser will also contain trace elements essential for plant growth. Q4 All Purpose Plant Food contains vital plant foods and trace elements that are essential for the growth of flowers and crops. The high potash ratio will boost the number of flowers and toughen up the foliage on roses and many other flowering plants. All rose feeds are high in potash and they can be used with lots of flowering plants - although they do tend to be expensive. Westland Gro-Sure Tomato Food (6-3-10) Light sandy soils tend to be hungrier. Clay soil is much more fertile, so needs less fertiliser. Garden compost
Welcome to Vitax
I have used Q4 for a while in my garden and my containers with great success. What is good about the fertilizer is that you do not need to add a lot, especially in containers. You can mix it with compost before planting and/or you can use it as a top dressing.
Tomatoes, strawberries and bedding plants need a potassium-rich feed to encourage flowers, such as Tomarite. A balanced slow-release fertiliser will often have equal amounts of each and this mixture will feed a plant for several months without producing a noticeable surge of growth. Choosing your fertilisers Liquid seaweed is concentrated liquid that needs diluting. It's easy to water on to seedlings and releases nutrients slowly. High in potash but needs continual applications to improve growing conditions. Tips for using branded fertilisers The confusion in this thread seems to be caused by conflating two things - feeding plants and 'feeding' soil. Chemical fertilizers such as Growmore or Vitax feed plants directly but do little for the soil. Soil health is important, and that is improved by adding composted materials such as animal manures, good garden compost, leafmould, any humus rich material basically, which will naturally increase bio diversity; that bio diversity will naturally provide more trace elements and more nutrients to your plants, but over time rather than in a week or three. It will help plants to grow vigorous producing new shoots, flowers in abundance and fruits in larger numbers. It should be used regularly throughout the growing season. It can be used on fruit trees and soft fruit bushes to increase harvests. One thing it cannot replace is phosphorous that is required for root growth. The problem is that this general purpose fertiliser does not have enough phosphorus in the form of phosphate to aid these plants. It will help but you need more to grow your carrots and parsnips. It is a general-purpose fertiliser that comes in the form of a granular feed that contains nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium that plant need with added trace elements. It will provide a wide range of plants enough nutrients throughout the growing season. You think it is a secret but the cat is now out of the bag, as this is one of the products that they use.
