About this deal

New to the S5 II X is Wired Streaming up to 4K/60p and FHD/60p Wireless IP Streaming, and SSD recording via USB-C 3.2 which enables full sensor Apple ProRes recording internally up to Full HD at 60fps 422 HQ and full sensor Apple ProRes recording externally up to 5. 8K/30p 422 HQ with a hefty data rate of 1.9Gbps. There’s also a clutch of video-centric display options shutter angle, waveform, vectorscope, and histogram.

Like the original S5, the S5IIX is far from small and fiddly. It’s grip is reasonably chunky and it feels comfortable in the hand. It’s also good to know that the camera body frame is made from die-cast magnesium alloy and it’s sealed against dust and moisture ingress. However, it will be interesting to see how the fan vents cope with rain. The camera delivers up to 6.5 stops of in-body image stabilization meaning you can shoot stills and video in lower light without a tripod. (Image credit: James Artaius) While Panasonic says the sensor in the S5 II is also new, from what we've seen its performance appears to be similar to its non-phase-detect predecessor, which suggests that its newfound ability to shoot at up to 30fps in e-shutter mode is more about having a processor able to cope with this speed. Built-in fan There is enough commonality between the S5 and the Mark II that the new camera can still use the existing DMW-BGS5 battery grip, providing space for a second battery. BatteryWhat there aren't, though, are better videography cameras out there (unless you step up to a cinema camera). So if you're happy with a capable stills body because what you really want are blow-away video features, the S5 IIX is your camera. If the Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX isn't for you

The camera's battery life rating is a rather disappointing 370 shots per charge, per CIPA standard testing methods. As always, these numbers tend to significantly underestimate how many shots you can typically expect (unless your shooting style is very energy-intensive). A 370 shot-per-charge rating will typically give you plenty of charge for a day's shooting, but you'll want to keep a USB power source near to hand for intensive shoots. A power-saving mode gives a rating of 1,250 shots per charge for viewfinder shooting. Like the S5II, the S5IIX has a 3.68-million-dot OLED viewfinder with a refresh rate of 60 or 120fps. That resolution is up from the 2,360,000-dot OLED electronic viewfinder in the original S5. The Panasonic S1R and S1 both have 5,760,00-dot viewfinders, but putting that in the S5IIX would push its price up.

The Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX promises to be the ideal full-frame hybrid camera for the video-focused creator, but does it deliver?

The S5 II continues to use the DMW-BLK22 battery from the previous version, which means it's also fully compatible with the same AC adaptor, DC coupler and dedicated battery chargers as the Mark I. As the S5II and S5IIX offer full-sensor recording (or ‘Open Gate’ as Panasonic calls it), the footage can be cropped to a variety of aspect ratios for use on social media without significant loss of image quality.
