While Tunic takes big cues from the ultra-challenging games from our past and present, it also includes a range of options that allow players to customize the combat challenge to suit their interests, without actually removing the fun of fighting ferocious fiends. Players can opt out of some of the more technical aspects of the combat, or even enable a “no fail” mode. Whether Boss fights provide a solid change of pace though, showing off what Tunic can be like at its best. These massive enemies provide a solid challenge, and force players to use every resource they have at their disposal, leading to some pulse-pounding battles. They’re the only time Tunic‘s difficulty feels authentic instead of clumsily imposed. you’re new to the dodge-rolling action RPG genre and still learning the ropes, playing your first real adventure with a young one, tired from a long week of work, or mostly just here for the incredible puzzles, this game has you covered.

A few blemishes aside, the eight-year wait for Tunic has been completely worth it. If you could lay out all of its pieces separately like a broken puzzle, each one might seem derivative. However, when you put all the pieces together to create a full picture, they make for a game that's quite unlike anything else. As well as an incredibly detailed in-game instruction manual that doubles as a puzzle book (or triples as a strategy guide), complete with strange notes from some previous owner. Tunic starts the way so many adventure games do: With its main character, an adorable Fox wearing a tunic, waking up on a beach. The game offers you very little guidance from there in terms of where to go or what to do. The basics will be intuitive to anyone who’s ever played a Zelda game (find a sword and start slashing enemies and grass), but Tunic itself takes a very hands-off approach to the player experience.

That doesn’t mean it will never come to PlayStation. Finji has followed up with further platform compatibility for some of its games after launch, like a Nintendo Switch version for Chicory six months after its original release. It’s worth noting, though, that Finji typically doesn’t publish timed exclusives. Timed exclusives typically stay exclusive for a year or more, so we shouldn’t expect an announcement about Tunic’s availability for other consoles until much later. It’ll probably matter on its sales numbers, too. When I wasn’t banging my head against a wall trying to figure out where to go next in Tunic (which even has a cheeky achievement called “What now?” as if I hadn’t been asking myself that same question), I was able to actually somewhat enjoy its simplistic take on combat. However, it only shines for small parts of the game, and eventually is overshadowed by repetition. Tunic takes around 12 hours to beat normally, but if you’re trying to solve all of its mysteries, that playtime could easily balloon up to 20. Should you buy it?a b "Games in 2023".
