About this deal

With the help of the app, as well as the Linkplay technology, it is also possible to realise multi-room audio streaming. Streaming can be controlled directly via the app in each individual room, the volume can be adjusted, the sound can be optimised via the sound control or different speakers can be connected with each other. Drivers built into the Elara are a 25mm silk dome tweeter crossing over to a 135mm woofer that has a treated paper cone. The tweeter uses a Neodymium magnet. A close squiz reveals it has a high standard of finish and that it will play 33 and 45 rpm records. Each rear-ported cabinet measures 11.5”H x 6.5”W x 9.25”D. The two-way LN01A has a 5.1” midrange-woofer with a treated-paper cone, crossed over at 1.8kHz to a 1” silk-dome tweeter. The specified frequency response is 56Hz-22kHz, ±3dB. The speakers are supplied with magnetically attached cloth grilles, at the bottom of each grille a large Triangle logo. For some time now, Triangle Electroacoustique has obviously been trying to gain a foothold in a somewhat broader market and has been focusing on so-called wireless speakers, such as the latest product, the Triangle AIO TWIN Speakers.

For the past couple of decades, the audio industry has been angsting about how to get young listeners interested in hi-fi. It’s not that teens and twentysomethings don’t love music; it’s that their musical lives revolve around smartphones, headphones, maybe a Bluetooth speaker. How can they be introduced to the joys of listening to real stereo from real hi-fi speakers? No matter how rose coloured my audio memories, sound-wise the Triangle gear stomps all over what I used to begin my audio journey. In Gould’s Goldbergs the lower octaves of the piano had better definition through the Totems, a little more clarity in the upper octaves. But in that explosion of joy at the beginning of Variation 1 the piano tone was a bit more clangy. It’s worth noting that this is a very early digital recording made in 1981, and was miked quite closely, with almost no reverb. In reproducing it, the Totems were clearly less forgiving than the Triangles. The LN01A’s 2-way configuration includes a 25mm fabric dome tweeter combined with a 13cm ‘concave style’ mid-woofer. Triangle’s design specifically strives to achieve the warm and detailed signature sound that listeners will recognise from other products across their ranges. No Vinyl Left Behind As I said in the introduction, Triangle’s Elara LN01A could serve as a great introduction to the joys of hi-fi -- but this little speaker could also work well as a secondary system in a secondary room. The LN01A can be used to stream music in true stereo from a smart device, but can also serve as the core of a sound system including a turntable, a disc player, a game console, a TV, and other sources. Bluetooth circuitry is built into the Elara speakers. This supports the aptX codec for Android devices and SBC for iPhones. The Elara is said to have a power output of 50-watts and a frequency response of 56-20,000 Hz measured at one metre +/-3dB.

The left-channel speaker weighs 10.2 pounds. The only connectors on its rear panel are a pair of binding posts that accept bare wire, banana plugs, or spade lugs -- the left-channel LN01A looks like, and is, a conventional passive two-way minimonitor. Over the last year or so, speaker manufacturers have rushed into the active speaker market, and after listening to several models I have softened on the idea. While I actually like the exercise of system matching, I can definitely see the benefits of buying a pre-matched setup. Testing the LN01A’s phono stage performance with a Project Debut Carbon the speakers maintain consistency and character. A bit of Bob Marley And The Wailers’ ‘Turn Your Lights Down Low’, showcases their ability to handle sustained, deep beats and deliver rich low frequencies. The vocal harmonies and melodies remain clear and well-defined. Using the phono stage, the presentation loses some solidity and openness but remains engaging and detailed enough to enjoy, and opens up a realm of choices in the turntable market to boot.Operation of the ELARA system is pretty straight forward. As stated before, you just need to plug the power cord into the left speaker, then connect the supplied speaker wire to both speakers and then flip the power switch on the powered speaker. There is an led on the front of the powered speaker that lets you know the speakers are turned on, it lights up blue if you are using Bluetooth and green for any of the other inputs. Speaking of Bluetooth, it’s the 4.0 variety with aptX. As this is an active speaker set, the left speaker is equipped with 2 x 50w Class-D amplification. The right speaker is passive and is driven by the left via a supplied speaker cord. The two speakers have standard binding posts, so you should, in theory, be able to use any speaker wire, however, the manual recommends to use only the included wire. The Triangle LN01A active HiFi speakers are here – and aiming to deliver an immersive and clutter-free audio experience. Where the Elaras ensure Dandelion Wine by Gregory Alan Isakov and the Colorado Symphony sounds impressively substantial and imposing, the Audioengines retort with a more intimate, albeit restrained, rendition. The LN01A set embodies a true plug-and-play mentality. Its large array of available inputs include phono, coaxial, optical and RCA connectors, as well as a dedicated subwoofer output for extending the low end. The system also supports Bluetooth 4.0 APTX for wireless streaming which equates to CD quality performance (16 bit / 44.1kHz).
