Over the last few years, the distillery has started to recognise that whisky enthusiasts are seeking more than just the gentle, straight-forward Tomintoul experience. Enter a range of sometimes inelegantly crafted ‘bolt on’s’: Tomintoul ‘with a peaty tang’, a small range of cask finishes and a handful of older, vintage expressions. Necessary diversification, but often without the justification and brand work required.

There are also various self-catered options, from small cottages to houses and steadings. The Old Pine Yurt is a more unique way that allows you to connect with nature. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). It was the Duke of Gordon who commissioned the village, he planned and built it along a military road, it has wide roads, stone-built buildings, and two listed (historically protected) churches. I find myself asking if the impressive “21” on the label is enough to justify such a large sum? No doubt it used to be but haven’t things moved on? Haven’t tastes evolved? Nowadays there are fantastic whiskies at just three years old and there are no-age-statement releases with such intensity and complexity that age almost seems irrelevant. I’m not advocating an end to age statements, only suggesting that they aren’t necessarily the attraction they once were.

Overall: A tasty, easygoing malt that has been murdered by the addition of far too much water. By God, this should be 46% at least. The fact that it has been waterlogged – indeed, drowned at 40% ABV – should be ruled a crime against Man and Whisky. For shame. For what it’s worth, it’s a sight better than the Tomintoul 10-year, and definitely worth the extra cash if you’re one of the two or three Tomintoul fans out there. (Cue the two or three angry comments.) Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. As always, I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the drams and the value for money they represent.

Time it right and you could experience a 200-years-old tradition: the Tomintoul Highland Games. Every third Saturday in July, the villagers (and guests) gather for a day of Scottish festivities. Dress appropriately – visitors are encouraged to join in the fun events. Finish: Short to medium and quite malt focussed – oats, cereals, malt cake – alongside lemon rind and a tingle of pepperiness. Something that is worth mentioning, however: Tomintoul is the proud employer of one of the Scotch whisky industry’s longest serving Master Distillers. Robert Fleming joined the company in 1990 and for more than thirty years he has guided the production of the distillery’s single malt, overseeing the creation of the entire current range of expressions. Tributes to 'courteous courageous and delightfully mischievous' Terry Wogan after his death at the age of 77". The National . Retrieved 1 December 2017. With Water: A few drops of water brings more of that white peach to the front, along with green tea. Alas, it seems to drown out the other notes. The water also makes the palate thinner and even more watery, perhaps even bland. If you use water, use it sparingly.

The Duke built the village hoping to discourage cattle theft and illegal distilling in the area. Unlike Fochabers, (another village the Duke built), Tomintoul was forgotten and neglected. Thoughts: I was pleasantly surprised. In the past I’ve found Tomintoul to be a little lightweight and inoffensive. However, whilst this certainly isn’t the most robust dram I’ve ever come across, it’s more fully flavoured than I was anticipating. Maybe not the most complex but a nice, straight-forward single malt that’s perfectly poised between spirit and oak. Located on the northern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, Tomintoul is the highest village in Highlands. At 345 metres above sea level, it features spectacular landscapes, rugged mountains and, in the winter, regular snow. Tomintoul is extraordinary in so many ways, including the quantity and variety of accommodations available.Enter Tomintoul – the gentle dram. A whisky which you both see everywhere and yet is still somehow under the radar. A whisky which to my mind owes much of its composition to the distillery's history (and current) requirements for blending – and as such struggles to shine in our modern world.
