Hartley needs a cupboard for his clothes. Pig draws plans for Johnny to make him one. But when it's made, they find there's a snag which makes it impossible to use............. Hartley and Pig pretend they are flying to the moon. When they arrive there, Hartley finds an animal quite different to any animal he has seen before…. It's the Pipkins day off and they decide to put on a play in the workshop. After they learn their parts, they learn another lesson. Never put on a production with a very hungry pig!

Pipkins (originally Inigo Pipkin) is a British children's TV programme. Hartley Hare, Pig, Topov and the gang were the stars of ATV's pre-school series which ran from January 1973 to 29 December 1981. Michael Jeans & Susan Pleat were the main writers for Pipkins. Their creativity and skill in crafting engaging stories for children contributed a great deal to the show’s success. Here’s a list of the cast of Pipkins. Character Pigeon, on a visit to Pipkins has a little accident with a chimney pot and hurts her wing. They take her in and look after her. But as time goes on, she becomes a rather difficult patient….. Pipkins was a unique British children’s TV programme that featured a range of animal characters with regional accents. The main characters included Hartley Hare, Pig, Topov the monkey, Octavia the ostrich, Pigeon, Mrs Penguin, Uncle Hare, and Sophie the cat. What type of animal was Hartley Hare?

It’s raining outside and the roof leaks, but nobody minds because there are plenty of things one can do with water. Octavia even gets a chance to wear her new hat. Oh yes, the chap with the saw is Johnny, Mr Pipkin’s assistant, who has just completed his first animal, an impressive dragon. It is the Pipkins day off. They decide to have a picnic and get everything ready, but just as they are about to go, the van won't start. They all decide to go to the picnic in different ways…………… Octavia, who usually takes the letters to the post box has gone to her singing lesson, so Hartley must do it. But this is not as easy as he thinks. Hartley loses his voice, but to make up for the peace and quiet, other problems arise when Hartley cannot make himself understood….

Pipkins ended when ATV lost its franchise for the Midlands ITV region, was restructured and became Central Independent Television. The programme was replaced by Let’s Pretend. Topov is unhappy. He thinks there are better places to live than Pipkins and that everyone else is better off........... Pipkins try to keep the air clean by not using their van, but this leads them into trouble, and bad tempers….. No, hang about Pig. I think I've got it. I know how we can help the children. You just thin what Pigeon said.

This lorry carries parcels. It takes parcels away. But how? what makes the lorry go? What drives the engine? Petrol! The lorry gets petrol from these pumps. And how do the pumps get the petrol? The pumps get petrol from this big thing here. This is a petrol tanker. The tank is full of petrol. Pipkins ended when ATV lost its franchise for the Midlands ITV region, was restructured and became Central Independent Television. The programme was replaced by Let's Pretend. A gas fitter mends a leak in the kitchen so Hartley thinks the clever man can do any job around the house….

This was nearly the sad tale about the fate of the most beautiful marrow ever grown by Hartley's Uncle. But, as it turns out, Uncle makes one of the most amazing and wonderful discoveries of his life............... Pipkins good neighbour is Mrs Muddle, but how much is she prepared to help Hartley and his friends? Hartley has trouble learning the words of a song because of all the noise Pig and Tom are making but when he tries to stop the noise, he interrupts the smooth running of Pipkins.... Mr Pipkin is making an Ostrich. But Hartley doesn’t like other puppets and interferes by showing pictures of his uncle…..

Not forgetting Mrs McNamarra who never actually appeared but supplied the Pipkins with much of their work! Spitting Image was so cutting edge, almost dangerous at times. And then you’d be in the pub on a Monday and everyone was talking about what we did the night before, and that was also great. I did loads of characters, including virtually all the royals. Towards the end John Major was my main focus.” There are days when you don’t like too much noise going on around you. Today is one of those days for Hartley, so why can’t everyone keep quiet? If plants are alive, like we are, perhaps they can walk about, like us, thinks Topov. What would happen to his tree house, if his tree walked away?

Everybody is very excited because they are going on a picnic. But when they are all ready to leave, it starts to rain. Everyone is very sad, until Bertha arrives and thinks up something just as exciting for them to do indoors. Tortoise can’t go on keeping money under the settee, he needs somewhere special to put it. Charlie the dustman comes to the rescue with an idea.Octavia, a sophisticated ostrich with a French accent, brought an air of grace and charm to the programme. As one of the few female characters, Octavia often played the role of the voice of reason amongst the group. Hartley is fed up with being left in the office while the others are out enjoying themselves. So Johnny gives him his big chance, but it doesn’t quite work out as Hartley had hoped….
