About this deal

GlenDronach 12 yo 2004/2016 (54.1%, OB, for CC Taiwan, Oloroso sherry butt, cask #349, 653 bottles) - 190122 Overall: Worth every penny, age statements be damned. This is exactly what I want from a fortified wine finish. I can get malt-derived flavors all day long from Balvenie or Clynelish or Oban or a host of non-finished Highland malts, but when what I want is a desserty, concentrated bomb of fruit this is exactly the profile I seek out. Specifically, I’m talking about the differentiated layers of fruit. This has dried fruit (fig), baked fruit (pie filling), fresh fruit (kiwi, mango, passionfruit), and concentrated fruit (port reduction). The result manages to be both rich and luxurious without being too sweet or cloying. Excellent. This limited-edition release of Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky was matured in the finest Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry casks, direct from Andalucía in Spain. The casks were individually selected by Dr. Rachel Barrie, the first female Master Blender in Scotland’s history, then combined to create the perfect marriage of casks at 58.6% ABV natural cask strength, non-chill filtered and natural in colour. So, if you’re looking for a short but sweet dram with a great aroma that’s not too heavy on the price, GlenDronach 12 is a solid choice. Its sweet and fiery profile makes it a grand option for casual sipping.

Based on these scores, Macallan 12 Sherry Oak is the preferred choice. Its rich colour, complex palate, and overall flavour experience contribute to its victory. The whisky’s enticing aroma, satisfying mouthfeel, and well-balanced taste come together to create a captivating and immersive drinking experience. Glendronach 19 yo 1995/2015 (54.6%, OB, for Taiwan, oloroso sherry puncheon, cask #5086, 607 bottles) - 300816Macallan 12 Sherry Oak is a whisky that offers a remarkable and immersive experience from the moment you first encounter it. Similar to GlenDronach 12, it imbues the influence of the Oloroso casks, but this sherried Macallan takes it up a notch, delivering a punch of flavour and complexity that astonishes for a 12-year-old whisky. Glendronach 16 yo 1994/2011 (56%, OB for K&L Wine Merchants USA, Pedro Ximenez Puncheon, cask #3186, 606 bottles) - 221213 Glendronach 17 yo 1995/2013 (56.6%, OB for The Whisky Exchange, PX puncheon, cask #4682, 631 bottles) - 270513 Billy’s vision was to see GlenDronach return to its traditional Sherry style of single malt whisky. Filling of Bourbon casks was immediately ceased and in 2009, much to the delight of malt fans across the world, GlenDronach “re-released” its iconic core range of 12, 15 and 18 year old 100% Sherried single malts. Glendronach 12 yo 2003/2015 (56.1%, OB, for Sansibar, Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon, cask #4630, 375 bottles) - 280817

Glendronach 26 yo 1992/2018 (52%, OB for The Whisky Barrel, PX puncheon, cask #8314, 706 bottles) - 230720 Glendronach 21 yo 1993/2014 (56.4%, OB, for Kenny Hsu Taiwan, oloroso sherry butt, cask #477, 589 bottles) - 290817

Tasting Notes Benelux

Glendronach 11 yo 2002/2013 (57.2%, OB, for Whiskybase, oloroso sherry butt, cask #2751, 701 bottles) - 221213 Things were going very well, but two key events over the next few years saw ownership of the distillery change hands and Allardice eventually losing his share in GlenDronach. The first was a fire in February 1837 that practically burned the distillery to the ground. Business suffered after the fire and some of the original partners retired, thereby opening the door for Walter Scott, former clerk and then distillery manager at Teaninich to become a new and equal partner of Allardice. The distillery was repaired, and business continued to flourish until the financial crisis of 1842 left Allardice bankrupt. The remaining partners bought his share and Walter Scott took the reins. The distillery flourished under his stewardship, expanding significantly between 1860 – 1880 and selling more whisky than any other distillery in Scotland during that time. On the nose, GlenDronach 12 obtained a higher score of 8/10, since it possessed a more enticing and captivating aroma. The aromas of cinnamon, ginger, and red fruits likely contributed to the higher score and created a strong olfactory impression. Later in the glass however, the flavours did not live up to this very appealing fragrance. This seems to be replacing the older GlenDronach “10 year” Port Wood, which had an age statement. (Or, perhaps, the UK version has the age statement? Information on this bottling is sparse.) I think we can all assume that means the NAS bottling is younger than 10. My guess is they needed the freedom to mix in some high-performing 8- and 9-year casks to meet demand. That’s just a guess. The age-stated version’s label also revealed a 3-year extra maturation time in Port (so 7 in sherry, 3 in port). This NAS version doesn’t mention that, so it’s possible the time spent in port has been shortened as well.
