About this deal

The top plate features two precision-milled aluminum dials, giving the camera a premium feel and allowing users to easily adjust the shutter speed and exposure compensation while maintaining focus on taking a picture. The Exposure Compensation Dial now has the C position for exposure compensation up to ±5 stops. The new X-E3 is also equipped with an Auto mode selector lever for selecting the fully-automatic Advanced SR Auto mode where the camera can automatically select the optimum settings for a given scene. quote]I can remember a time when some USA photo magazines would include dismantling a camera as part of a test/review, thus commenting in detail on how it was made. This stopped a long time ago, whether or not because manufacturers didn't like such a degree of mistreatment of the products they loaned out or because of increasing complexity of the products I do not know. The point I'm making is that in the limited time products become available for review there has to be a limit as to how much can be included, and indeed how much people want to read about. This review tells us how well the lens performs on a variety of subjects, shows the data measured, comments on the handling and other general observations that hopefully give us the conclusion that it's excellent, albeit expensive. This 80mm is a great macro lens, but unless you really are shooting macro the Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 is better made with much more metal, smaller, lighter, a full stop faster and costs less. MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth.

The focus ring is very broad and sits across the middle of the lens. It’s covered in a rubber coating with a ridged texture and has a smooth glide like butter. Serious macro shooting is often done with manual focus. Manual focus works well, with very fine control, perfect for getting the exact focus with a magnified image. With the 1.5x crop factor taken into consideration, the focal length is equivalent to 122mm in 35mm terms. This sees it nestle its way in between the superb XF56mm f/1.2 R and XF90mm f/2 R LM WR lenses, which are equivalent to 84mm and 137mm respectively. The lens is rectilinear. It is possible to measure +0.01% pincushion distortion, but that is quibbling in the extreme.

There are no color fringes as shot Fujifilm's cameras, which by default correct for any that may be there.

Edge sharpness follows an identical pattern, excellent at f/2.8, outstanding at f/4, excellent from f/5.6 to f/16 and very good at f/22. Figures throughout are very close to the centre values, showing excellent edge to edge consistency. It was not until late 2017 that Fuji finally met the demands of the macro-cohort and released the much anticipated XF 80mm f/2.8 Macro.Voigtlander 35/2 Apo Ultron in XF mount. New last year. but I've never seen a test report or review. There is no doubt that the Fujinon 80mm f/2.8 Macro is a superb lens, but then so it should be as it is priced considerably above the rest of the market. Unfortunately for Fuji X users, there are limited options, but other marques have all sorts of fine macro lenses available to them. It is hard to find a bad macro lens where they all aspire to excellence, being a flagship optic for most marques.
