About this deal

I’d have thought that the Dualit EcoPress would require a degree of pressure to perform the action, but this wasn’t the case. A hard push is all that’s required to force the capsule inside out. Earlier this year, Sainsbury’s launched its new brand mission ‘Helping Everyone Eat Better’, reflecting its mission to encourage and empower customers to make a positive change for their health and the planet too.

Stating that something is recyclable and the ease with which it’s actually recycled are two different things. The coffee capsule is a case in point. Technically, aluminium pods can be recycled; but only if the coffee grounds are removed first, which can be a pain. The Dualit EcoPress will only work with original Nespresso (or compatibles) aluminium pods; it doesn’t accept pods designed to be biodegradable or that are made of plastic. It isn’t compatible with Nespresso Vertuo capsules or capsules for rival pod systems, either. PerformancePlease note some larger products are delivered to kerb-side (the street outside your home), it is at the drivers discretion if they can deliver the item to another location on the property. According to Alupro, if a capsule is still full of coffee then the Eddy wouldn't be strong enough to capture it, but capsules could be captured and recycled as long as they have been 'EcoPressed'.' Currently, customers are advised to recycle coffee pods via specialist collection schemes which aren’t always convenient, so the EcoPress will be welcomed by many. Once the coffee has been separated, users can put the remaining coffee in home compost bins, in kerbside food waste bins, or in their garden – using small quantities around plants*. As with the Dualit EcoPress for the standard capsules, the Dualit EcoPress for Vertuo is a plastic device designed to push a Vertuo Pod inside out, spilling its used coffee grounds into the bin, leaving the aluminium shell for recycling.

Helen Bird, recycling and plastics expert at WRAP, explains that: 'Even if coffee pods are made from a material that can be recycled at home, it's highly unlikely that they would be recycled in practice due to their small size - they simply drop out of the recycling process and are likely to either be landfilled or sent to an energy-from-waste facility.'The machines that separate mixed recycling (trommel screens) also now pull out the 'fines' (small items) that in the past might have been missed and sent to landfill. Most materials recovery facilities then put the fines over an Eddy Current Separator, an advanced metal sorting system that uses magnets to pull out non-ferrous metals like aluminium, from other materials.' Until now, it’s been widely believed that aluminium coffee pods are too small to be captured for recycling when items are being sorted. Sainsbury’s has challenged the industry and discovered that waste management companies have facilities that would actually be able to capture and recycle these smaller items. Scottish Highlands & Islands postcodes: AB, FK, HS, IV, KA, KW, PA, PH, ZE, LL58-LL78, IM, TR, PO30-41 Sainsbury’s has now become the first retailer to label its own brand aluminium coffee pods as recyclable, available in stores from the 12th September

That’s why we decided to challenge the notion that aluminium coffee pods can’t be recycled and with consumers more concerned about the planet than ever before, it felt like a natural place to look. Dualit recommends putting the capsules in a colander and then rinsing in washing up water. Which coffee pod brands are the most eco-friendly? - we investigate how easy it is to recycle used pods for different coffee machine systems such as Nespresso, Tassimo and Dolce Gusto You may be thinking, why bother? Well, filling up a recycling bag of your favourite Vertuo coffee pods needs storage somewhere, then you have to drop off the bags (or have them collected), and you don’t get to reuse the coffee grounds.
