About this deal

Epidemiological evidence from a large meta-analysis suggests no increase in risk of breast cancer in women with no history of breast cancer taking low dose vaginally applied oestrogens. It is unknown if low dose vaginal oestrogens stimulate recurrence of breast cancer. Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. The following interactions have been selected on the basis of their potential significance and are not necessarily all-inclusive. In a U.S. study where ESTRING was compared with conjugated estrogens vaginal cream, no difference in efficacy between the treatment groups was found with respect to improvement in the physician's global assessment of vaginal symptoms (83 percent and 82 percent of patients receiving ESTRING and cream, respectively) and in the patient's global assessment of vaginal symptoms (83 percent and 82 percent of patients receiving ESTRING and cream, respectively) after 12 weeks of treatment. In an Australian study, ESTRING was also compared with conjugated estrogens vaginal cream and no difference in the physician's assessment of improvement of vaginal mucosal atrophy (79 percent and 75 percent for ESTRING and cream, respectively) or in the patient's assessment of improvement in vaginal dryness (82 percent and 76 percent for ESTRING and cream, respectively) after 12 weeks of treatment. Talk to a GP or nurse about the best time to start using the ring and whether you need to use additional contraception. They can also give you advice on how to insert and remove it. To insert the ring:

Squeeze the sides of the Estring vaginal ring together and insert it into the vagina as far as possible (into the upper 1/3 of the vagina). You should not be able to feel the ring once it is in position. If you can feel it, use a finger to push it further into the vagina. It is not possible for the ring to go too far in or become lost. If any of the side effects gets serious, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. See section 4. Tell your doctor if you just had or will be having surgery, or if you will be confined to a chair or bed for a long time (such as a long plane flight). These conditions increase your risk of getting blood clots, especially if you are using an estrogen product. You may need to stop this medication for a time or take special precautions. you need to remember to change it and put in a new one – if remembering to do this is difficult, a longer-acting method such as the contraceptive implant or intrauterine device (IUD) may be more suitableTumors (estrogen-dependent), known or suspected—Should not be used in patients with these conditions. If you get a vaginal infection while using this ring, it is recommended that you remove the ring and resume treatment only after the infection has been treated. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Estring should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant whilst using Estring, you should stop using Estring immediately and tell your doctor that you are pregnant. Most women will start by inserting a new tablet every day for two weeks, then change to inserting a new tablet only 2 days each week. Carefully follow the schedule that your health caregiver tells you to. This medication can increase the risk of developing a condition (endometrial hyperplasia) that may lead to cancer of the lining of the uterus. Taking progestins, another hormone medication, with this medication lowers the risk of developing this condition. Therefore, if your uterus has not been removed (by a hysterectomy), your care team may prescribe a progestin for you to take together with your estrogen. You should know, however, that taking estrogens with progestins may have additional health risks. You should discuss the use of estrogens and progestins with your care team to determine the benefits and risks for you.

Frequency not reported: Increase or decrease in weight, reduced carbohydrate tolerance, aggravation of porphyria, hypocalcemia, increased triglycerides If more than 5 days have passed since the miscarriage or abortion, you need to use additional contraception (such as condoms) for 7 days after you insert the ring. Advantages and disadvantages Unlike a diaphragm or cap, the ring doesn't need to cover the entrance to your womb (the cervix) to work. Ritonavir and nelfinavir, although known as strong inhibitors, by contrast exhibit inducing properties when used concomitantly with steroid hormones. Herbal preparations containing St John's wort ( Hypericum Perforatum) may induce the metabolism of oestrogens. Stroke—sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, trouble speaking, confusion, trouble walking, loss of balance or coordination, dizziness, severe headache, change in vision

One ring to be inserted into the upper third of the vagina. Once inserted it is left in the vagina continuously for 90 days and replaced by a new ring as appropriate. For initiation and continuation of treatment of postmenopausal symptoms, the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration (See also Section 4.4) should be used. The maximum recommended duration of continuous therapy is two years. The pharmacokinetic properties of estradiol in humans are well known and depend, in large part, on the extent to which estradiol is taken up by the systemic circulation. The clinical effects of ESTRING are therefore governed by the release characteristics of the vaginal ring delivery system. If any of the above conditions appear for the first time while taking Estring, stop taking it at once and consult your doctor immediately. There's a very small risk of some serious side effects when you use a hormonal contraceptive like the vaginal ring. There have been rare reports of ring adherence to the vaginal wall, making ring removal difficult. Some cases have required surgical removal of vaginal rings.
